This is not a bad beat ..just a general question, so I put it under general topics.

I go all in cause I know I have the bigger hand, and I'm going to clear out this guy huge stack in a tourney that I was doing well in.

My higher two pair should have taken the whole pot...correct?

It's not a split pot.

It's a side pot and a main pot.

You won all the chips you were competing for with two pair, queen's and sevens.

The other person won chips from the other all in player.

You had less chips, so you can only win what you have + dead money.

To simplify it...

You had 10 chips and the other two players had 30 chips..

If all three of you go all in, there is a main pot of 30 chips (you are competing for this) and a side pot of 40 chips (you cannot win any of these chips as you weren't able to fully match their all in).

Your 10, player A's 10, player B's 10 = main pot.

Player A's further 20, Player B's further 20 = side pot.

Does that make sense?

Oh, I see. But here is a stupid question.

So even If I have the higher hand but less chips .....I don't get everything? Ive been playing poker for a few years, but I still have questions....so excuse my ignorance.

So you can only ever when what you have + dead money....regardless if the other players put up their whole stack or a huge stack against you?

Okay, I get it now.....thanks....does that apply if I go all in before someone? Does it apply if I go all in after them?

or it does not matter?

You can only win the percentage of a bet that you can match with your stack.

Like when you are short stack...

If someone bets 100 and you only have 75 left and call, they get 25 back.

You can't win the full 100 because you weren't able to match the 100.

You can only win what you were able to match.

Does that make sense?

No worries, glad to help!

100% better to ask a question that you think might be silly than to go on not understanding something!

(Not a silly question at all btw)

Whether you go all-in before or after (in regards to the side & main pot) is irrelevant - your stack sizes denotes how much you can play for.

If you have 75 and she has 100, regardless of who goes all in first, if either of you shoves and the other calls- the pot will be 75 + 75 = 150.

That being said, who is first into the pot is almost always is a large strategic factor.

It's much easier to raise all-in than it is to call all-in, but that is totally irrelevant to how the pots will be structured.
