What I see most are people talking about books, advice from players who have already won some type of poker tournament, information from poker sites and all.
But let's be smart, books never teach reality, no one is going to write a recipe book in any game, because if the game gives money the person will get their secret and win the game.
The champion player, the said ambassador of the site will never deliver his true technique of game because otherwise he will become a loser.
The best way to learn to play poker is by playing and creating your own style, paying no attention to the literatures, the advice of those who are never stupid enough to teach you how to beat even yourself.
To buy poker books, spend money on poker professionals, you yourself are a professional. You think that someone who is playing poker will teach you how to beat yourself, never, and if you are mean you will see that the book on the foundation is teaching you how to give money to the poker stalls.
So try to learn by yourself, nothing like thinking that any of them is better or bigger than you, poker never left and will no longer be a game, although it has some strategy.
This coach only works if someone who has ever played poker and retired in poker and never again play and live to teach, there may even teach you something.

Well, you contradict yourself... If the way to be a better poker player is that what you say, why would you write that? Your are teaching us how to beat you? I believe that you vision is very selfish. Of course you cant learn all of the game by the others, but you can really learn form others players, and most of the people that take the advices from the pros keep playing without applying them, like in life...

You can learn a lot from other people teaching you and coaching you.
Watch the movies, read the books and grow on you poker skills.
Then after a while, when the basic training has been done, you can look around and say i am my own teacher.

You understand very well, my message, that's right, spending time will see that you are his teacher. Poker is dynamic and every move changes.

I completely agree with you. I did not read any books, did not watch any videos. All my skills are my personal experience. And I see that my skills only grow.

You are entitled to believe whatever thoughts you so desire.
It appears to be very strange using your logic to hear how poker pro’s discuss and learn from each other to improve their own games.
But you my friend keep on teaching yourself this game….. Good luck with that

Education is all part of winning. Just as you use BRM, a part of that should be dedicated as well to learning. If you are not incorporating a portion of you're winnings to some sort of study to the game you are not getting everything you should from the game.

Of course, the books do not have a recipe on how to win money.
But thanks to the books, you will have an understanding of how to build your own profitable game strategy. Of course, that without practice, nothing will work out. Do not underestimate the value and benefits of books. If you still do not understand it, then this is just your problem.
Good luck.

Well if you want to rediscover the hot water and fire it is your choice to do that. Reading poker books and trying to learn from pros can give you knowledge about at least the basic principles of poker and can give you a good foundation on which to build and develop your own strategy later. It is just like every other education process - learning mathematics at school can not guarantee that you will become professor in mathematics later but if you do not learn the basics you will not become expert for sure.

Hi.
I totally disagree with you.
Although I am actually a beginner and I have read just two books, but thanks to these books, I understand the essence of the game much better. I am sure that the book always helps to improve their strategies. Maybe, you think so because you did not read the books you needed to read.
Good luck.

This sounds like someone who is arrogant and probably never read through and understood any of the poker books he's referring too. I've never read a book or article that didn't give me some insight. Yes experience is key to growing and executing what you've LEARNED! Tell me what books have you read?

Coaching has brought a lot of success to many players. Even watching Youtube vidoes are considered coaching and help you understand the game considerably more. Please share who's coach you?

Let me ask you again

1) What books have you read?

2) Who have you received coaching from?

3) Are you an arrogant player? Do you think reaching a certain level of success without assistance is a badge of honor?

4) What success have you accomplished in poker?

I have to respectfully disagree with the OP ...

I think that if you only learn from your own experience then you will continue to make the same mistakes for far longer than you have to ...imho you have to open yourself up to the ideas and thoughts of others .... test it a little ...it's definitely a back and forth and what you learn on Monday you have to apply on Tuesday ...

For me I have to keep learning or I feel I stagnate... will you learn from your own experiences ?? Of course, but I feel you will learn much faster and many more valuable lessons if you look to others for information to test out and see if it works for you ....if it comes from books, coaches, training video or what you and your best friend talk about over a drink ..... I always try to find and make time for another point of view.

In the end you have to decide what is good for you, but I feel you have many more examples to try and learn from when you open yourself to more study.... you only have to keep the ones you feel work for you, and fit into your playstyle, and you might be surprised how studying someone else's views may allow you discover more for yourself ...

I agree that these books will not really be a magic formula that will make us big and profitable players. but in it will have information that you may not know or until you know and never wanted to see, recognize a mistake and improve your own game. It is not magic formula is to aggregate knowledge is what makes studying the game so important.
