Yeah you've been there... You just flopped top two pair and bet heavy. You're protecting your value like you should. Smarmy dude in the glasses is keeping up with you. A notably bored look on his face as he calls you again on 4th St. You pick up on Dude Mcgraw's seemingly forced lack of interest (a 'tell' I think they call it) so you check the river with unease..... Mr McGraw raises big..... in this moment your inner dialogue reminds you... "This looks bad"... "Great lay downs make great poker players"..... alas....
Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe it was hope. Maybe it's Mayballine.
Whatever the reason.... you call and you hold your breath.
Wanting to get it over with, you display your top two pair proudly and exhale relief as he turns one card over and says "pair". You're reaching forward to scoop your pot and what does this guy do? He waits for you to touch "your" chips before turning over his other card and saying "oh wait, but... I have another one... three of a kind."
Your heart sinks and face flushes hot. You're instantly reminded why you play online so much. You feel regret. Not a regret for calling his raise. Right now your only regret is not practicing throwing cards more often. "Sorry", he says with a smirk, but you don't even hear him. Right now you're lost in a fantasy of pulling a Chris Ferguson on this guy and lodging a jack of hearts in his forehead. Oh, and by the way... he's not sorry.
Slowrollers... this is for you; Nobody likes you and you're going to a bad place when you die.

Sincerely,
All the people who never want to play cards with you.

I honestly don't think I've ever been slow rolled. But then again, I don't assume the pot is mine until my opponents show their cards or muck. I don't reach for the chips, I wait til the dealer pushes them towards me.

Yeah this has never happened to me at a casino or poker room. This is more about my "friendly" home games.

In macau highstake cash games, slowrolls are apparently quite well received.
Theres a story of a recent slowroll in a very large pot (in the millions of HKD) and the guy had nuts on the river, got shoved on and tanked it by going to the bathroom for whats claimed to be about 5 minutes coming back and calling.
Heres the proof http://www.pokernews.com/news/2014/03/tom-hall-reveals-intimate-details-of-macau-poker-17725.htm

Well... that article is downright insane.

Too many times when i have tried to slow roll i have been burned by letting the other guy get his hand when i could have had him lay it down if i didn't slow roll so i don't do it anymore

You're thinking of "slow play". Slow roll is different from that. :)

A slow play is when you under-play your strong hand, trying to disguise it as a weak hand. A slow roll is when you have the nuts, you know you have the nuts and you either tank (time-clock) before making the final call, or taking forEVER to turn your winning cards over when the hand is done (as in the example OP gave above).

Bad manners. Just that. Same as a sore loser. Both types seem to take some weird pleasure either in whining or winning. No respect for these types of players.
Grace is one thing you need when losing, twice needed in winning.

'slow fold' - where you muck your cards one at a time.

I think slow rolling is permissible at your home games where everyone knows each other. It's part of the banter. I might do it to a close friend but never to someone I don't know and/or has a history of GBH.

In OP's situation I may have been tempted to call the floor and do everything in my power to get this pot or get this guy penalized lol.

I have never called the floor or argued with anyone at a poker table but I also have never been slow rolled especially to this extent. This is boarderline angle shooting since our slow rolling villain is first to show their cards and we are last to act and by villain announcing one pair has gotten us to flip over our hand that could have been mucked if villain announces correctly..

On a side note why when we verbalize our bets during our turn to act that its binding but when we verbalize our hand strength at showdown like in OP's example it's not? X.X

Obviously we couldn't have people verbalizing I have a royal flush andRalways winning pots but you know what I mean!

That guy showed no class by holding onto the third card of his three of a kind - no doubt about it. Yet, slow rolling or slow playing is part of the game and as much as we hate getting burned by a slow play we know that there are situations that call for slow playing. The trick is to only get beat by a slow player once!

Yeah I love playing slow and people catch up on that real quick and will remember that, so if you use it too early in a tournament it may come to your advantage later on as well.
As for this guy, he's a dick and I hope he loses all his money gambling. No reason to be a douche when you win. Just be kosher with your fellow card players.

-end rant.

there are hundreds of thousands of players and of course everyone is different.
How do you control all of them?
There are young and old, male and female, good and bad, fish and donks...
so many personalities!
Sometimes the slow roller is just a bit simple, sometimes just down right mean .How can we determine this players disposition and personality?
I say live and let live. The deliberate mean, aggressive player will get what they deserve...eventually !!
Play poker nd enjoy the ride.We cant win every hand , every tournament,so just play to your limits, turn a blind eye to the idiots, and smile to yourself .
There is pay back...so just wait..it will happen.
Good luck all...

Slow rolls are like the unwritten rules of baseball. It's not technically illegal, just dirty and other players will hate you for it and go head hunting when given the chance.

I've only seen one, and that was in a freeroll.

Guy had 4k or a sf, don't remember, when he finally showed, I'm thinking what was the point of the s.r ?

I guess it's a "look at me and how great (a player) I am. " mentality (in a fr lol)

Or even like a 2 yr old "nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah I have a xxxxxx and you don't
