What are the similarities between poker and chess? Why many successful competitive players (players DotA, cs, Warcraft), as well playing poker. In my opinion between the games have nothing in common.
What do you think?

Chess - skill, poker skill and luck. Now backgammon is a similar game to poker but seldom mentioned in gambling threads but a lot of money played for.

The only difference from poker to chess is that poker is 20 % luck / bad luck and chess is 100 % skill

Chess is a game of strategy where you can make various different moves. A sequence of moves is known as a "line". You need to find weaknesses in your opponent's setup and exploit those weaknesses. You also need to take into consideration what your opponents likely plan is when they make a specific move at you (ie. try to put yourself in their shoes).

All of this is very similar to poker. Chess and poker have a lot in common. They're both games of strategy designed for people that think logically and can exploit weaknesses in their opponents.

They both train the mind to be sharp and try and predict others actions. I think they share some strategy traits.

In chess your first need is skills and in poker your first need is luck
And for both patience and attention

chess and poker are two completely different games.Ofcourse in every game you need skill and a bit of luck, but comparing chess and poker is nonsense to me.In chess you have specific moves and its more strategy, whilst in poker theres more variance and larger number of players.

Chess is 100%skill n focus game . Poker is also skill n focus game but sometimes u need luck to be on your side. Dota is also skill n focus game diffrent form poker is u dont play for money n you dont need to be lucky. Cs is classic skill n focus game.Thats mine opinion (sorry for bad english). Cheers!

As mentioned before, poker has a part luck while chess is 100% skills. Another difference is the amount of information available. With chess you have 100% information available (you can see everything, both your own as the opponents pieces), so it's a matter of being able to process all the information and make your decision based on that. The person that has enough knowledge about the game (at really high levels there is a marginal difference between the players) and is able to process the most information wins. With poker the situation is completely different. There is a big lack of information (you only know you cards and but not (all of) the opponents cards. So in this case you have to make a decision while not knowing everything. The person that can make the best decision based on the partially available information and can 'fill the gaps' will win.
The reason that a lot of poker players are also good chess players is probably because they like games. Probably they also like other kind of games where you have to use your brain.
Another game some poker players also enjoy is Magic the Gathering, which is more similar to poker than chess. There is a lack of information, there is a luck factor by not knowing which cards you'll get, but a skill in using the cards you get the best you can.

I love to play poker and mainly chess. Both have similarity in my opinion. In chess lucky is present too. The opponent can make certain move and win, but he can move other piece and then you win.

And why would you call that move luck and not just skill or the lack of it? You should give your opponent credit for being good at the game, and not making it easy for yourself, saying you got bad luck.
There is zero luck in chess, except for deciding who plays with black or white.

As a few people have mentioned above they're all games of skill which require strategy and intellect.

Poker is different because it also requires luck, and you're working with incomplete information (the contents of your opponents' hands).

You can find something in common in any game if you wish. But I think that we should not compare chess and poker. There are more differences than common.

In chess, the ability to play a big role, but there is luck in poker. Сyber sportsmen because in both games, there is logic, the ability to assess the situation, to predict the effect of the enemy. Poker is also fun to play

I play poker and CS but I don't believe they have so much in common. Same for chess and poker. They are completely different games but they are games and all games have something in common - the desire for win. No matter if it is poker, boxing, soccer/football, basketball and so on you need to be patient, you need to find a weakness in your opponent and you need to play logical. For example if you all the Counter-Terrorist camp on A side your logical decision is to plant the bomb at B side instead of going to play Rambo against all of them. But still poker and any other game are different on so many levels.
