Showing Cards

So this thread is basically just to see what everyone else thinks about showing your cards after a hand if everyone else folds out. Generally, I never show my cards at all regardless of what type of game I'm in or what stage it is at. I think keeping that mystery about yourself whether or not you were bluffing or not can be a good thing with other players around the table not knowing your style of of play. However recently I've started to think about showing them every now and then whether I was bluffing or betting big for good reason to try and get in my opponents head a bit more: maybe showing a bluff so that next time you bet in a similar way they might think you are bluffing more and be more reliant to call. Or showing your good hand so that perhaps you can bluff easier the next time around. I'm not talking about showing all the time, but maybe every once in a while to try and get in my opponent's head. What do you guys think about this?

Personally I never show but some people show the occassional bluff or the occassional nuts to keep people guessing as to their style of play.
The thing I don't like is when they show one card. This in my opinion should not be allowed and I have an immediate dislike for anyone that does it.

I agree with most of the answers, just fold'em you dont want to end up getting accustomed to doing that at home then try it at a real game or tourney. Most if not all real players are going to look at that as a real big mistake on your part.

I am in the "never show" camp.

Why give the villain any info? The only time misinformation works is when the villain thinks about poker. And if they are a thinking player, I don't want to give them any info, even if to show a bluff.

YMMV

I will sometimes show them after a bluff, however, I probably bluff 1 hand out of 500, so that 1 time I show when I bluff, I hope it makes someone call me with a lower hand the next time I bet the same way.

BUT, this can be seen both ways, it could get me to think someone is only calling because of my previous bluff, but for them to have a nuts hand.

i really don't have any preference. i sometimes show, i sometimes muck. that's my strategy. if i always show or muck, then they will be able to understand my play. i don't have a pattern on doing this either. if i feel showing my cards, regardless if it's good or bad, i show it. same when i muck it.

You can show when you are balancing your range and you want to induce certain action.

For example, if you want to induce action in the future and get paid of big with value hands, show a big bluff. If people only see you as a nitty rock, you won't get much action.

Online I will show very seldom.

Live I just never show. It is strictly 'pay to see'.

I totally agree with this. I mostly show when I am bluffing or winning the pot with a pair. When I have good cards I always muck :D

Well everyone has got their own way .. i personally never reveal my cards anywhere either live or online. I want to keep opponents wondering what my hand was rather than showing them and making them play a bit hostile against me in future. It don't prefer giving any sort of information whatsoever. So "no pay, no show". :reddy:

Better to show only good cards and everyone will think that you always nuts when you do raise.

It depends.

During the session, if they respect my bet and win some hands, then I will not show it.

If however they dont respect me at all, I will show those strong hands.

Sometimes I like to show solid hands, so I establish the image of extra tight. It allows me to get away with more bluffs.

In live games i also follow your rules... "no pay, no show" , but online i show my stronger hands if everyone folds.

Not a good idea to give information unless you want to give them false information, so that in the future you do the opposite.

Personally I don't like to show, regardless of the circumstances.

People make mistakes because of indecision, so it is always better to keep them guessing. Even when you show a river bluff to provoke this indecision in a certain player, you actually just provide more certainty and have given everyone else at the table a free peak at your range in that position, not to mention how you played your hand on every street.

Anyone who is paying attention will likely not care about your bluff but use the other stats for their advantage. Even if you switch up your play after this moment, you have still created a feeling of certainty amongst your opponents that you are exploitable. Whilst this may not be the case, it doesn't matter, because if it leads to more clear betting/folding against you at the table as opposed to unsure checking/calling, then you are the one who has to face more indecsion.

It can be a compliment sometimes to a good laydown. If I draw rockets, raise preflop, and everyone mucks I'll show because the hand is over anyway. It does help your table rep, tite paleyrs will show you more respect and you can get them off of hands more easily. (maybe) lol

I rarely show, unless i'm trying to get in my opponents head or represent a false image.

I only ever show in a home game that I play in. Everyone there is so bad that they don't know how to use any of the info that I'm showing them :)

fold 90 percent of the time. the only time I will show my cards is when i have taken down a few consecutive pots because then you get callers who go on tilt because of it or call simply because they think you are bluffing.

I don't show my cards usually, but if I want to trick my opponents I show them my cards and after that I must change my game. I use this option rarely because I don't want to help my opponents to beat me, because if I show them my cards, they will know how I play at tables.

Online I show quads(how often is that, lol) and no action hands (bb and everyone folds) if the cards are really good or really bad.- they can't learn anything if you didn't do anything.
I will show at friendly home games also, we are really just playing for entertainment, having a good time. Nobody is losing the rent money. If someone in our friendly game NEVER showed it would frankly be considered un-friendly.
casinos here rake so bad I don't go much.

I have only shown in rare circumstances where I have a "plan" down the road for it. But the other 99% of the time it is pay per view. And my bet sizing is always the same PF anyways, so they will not be able to exploit that. And if they are looking to exploit my post flop play with certain hands, that is where my plan begins, but that is just get fancy with them ;-)
