My question is: Should i make some money (if i'll be so smart/skilled enough) from poker when i think it's "waste" of time to working in country i live ...and i feel like even semi~ "pro" player i'll be able to make much more money from poker (even on low stakes i think) ?

I am 21, playing poker from like 18~ recreationally... last several months(like 3?~) i am playing on "part time" (like 2-3 hours per day) on pokerstars on small 45 player sit and go tournaments (0,50 buyin :D ) and after 700 tournaments i have ROI of 25 % (with some swings 21-29 %)

At the moment i have "status" of student of "university" (if i could call that piece of s**t in our small city) and sometimes i am part-time working...(if there's any work really) the problem is that next september i won't be longer student so i will have to work/study another school/stay unemployed...

I am from Slovakia (post communist country in the hearth of Europe) todays we got here like 15 % unemployment rate (something like 23 %~ in our city which is located in eastern part in most "poor" region...

I'd like to play online "semi-pro:D" and i will be happy when i'll make like 500-700 dollars (could be less in first months because of low starting bankroll which is now around 120 ~ dollars(started at 10 dollars) after 2 months of "low playing" ( some hours daily) like 2-3 days/ week
now you will probably laugh like "what the hell he want to start play poker full time and will be ok with 500 bucks monthly???
Consider that i am from country where average payout is 900 dollars and as most postcommunist countries we are pretty welfare state(health care for free, social help considered as good thankfully to our goverment of "social democrats" too) !!!!!!!!!

I'm living with my mother atm. so my monthly expenses is almost nothing... If i'd choose to work manually in my region i'll be able to earn like 500-700 dollars ~
Should i play poker instead of working ??????? if so which room/tournaments would you recommend me to play ? consider that i can multi-table 8 tables without making "misstakes"...

Thanks for your reply.......... John

To be honest sir i would wait this out. Im not saying you arent a good player. But you might wanna try a little high stakes and see if you can keep those winnings ways. Im not saying anyone can beat small games but beating the bigger games with making more and more profit is the way to go to becomming a pro.

as i said i'm able to profit on small tournaments so i wanted to ask if someone has experience with building bankroll (playing small stakes)... because if i would be able to "grind" :D out like 600-700 bucks i will consider myself as semi-pro because it will really pay my monthly expenses....

There are lots of players who are playing $3 - $7 45man SNG's (& 27's) with ROI around same as your's & higher with very large number of games played (if you check out some players on those tables you'll see some with 20,000+ games, ROI 25%+, playing 10+ tables... do the math).
If you continue to play, work on your game, move up in buyins & if you don't mind playing a gazillion hours of them... then why not?

It's a very personal and subjective matter IMO. In the short term, if you make an avg amount per hour that you feel is acceptable, and if you are okay handling the ups and downs, there's no compelling reason not to give it a try. OTOH, it's also possible that by focusing on poker, you'll end up delaying your entry into some other career. Maybe not the worst fate in the world, but if you just scrape by from poker, not great either.

in my opinion i should try it... but atm don't know which stakes / games to play... i've studied a strategy and i think that i can beat "average" players or fishes on small stakes especially in long term... but i don't know yet which games (cash games, sit n go tournaments..mtt tournaments) i should start to play...

i was instantly hooked when i saw that i can beat fishes on small stakes who doesn't read basic strategy of positions / pot odds etc... + and when i read that even candiands, americans players are thinking about playing "full time" ... and when i consider that they are able to earn much more better money (for me :D) through job than me/ citizens of my country ...( my monthly expenses if i'd choose to live alone would be 3-4 times lower than expenses of average candian/american player....

-get a real job.
-play poker on the side
-study your ass off/improve/study some more/improve/study even more
-Continue working real job
-When your making more income playing poker then real job, then you can have this discussion imo.

except with 23% unemployment its going to be tough to get work without experience/qualifications.

look for a job and play at same time imo.

true, didn't see that part

Still, I would have to think that attempting to find work would be more life +ev then grinding out .50 cent sng's

Try to find a way to make enough money to get the hell out of a country! If you can make an of money playing poker to get out, then do it.
