Hey everyone,

I recently played a session the other day and near the end I'm in a pretty decent size pot. I check the river intending to check raise bluff. My opponent tanks and finally says , man you seem so confident, then says you got man. He doesn't muck, I flip A high over and then he flips middle pair over.
To me him saying that is a fold, I know some thoughts on this stuff are opinion based. What are your thoughts?

How could he fold to no bet? Obviously it was him conceding the hand. Sometimes you just have to bluff river, instead of trying to get tricky.

See to me saying , I guess you got it is a check... you got and not showing is a fold

You had to show first and if you did have him beat then he could have mucked and not shown his hand. In no way what he said could be considered the same as mucking your hand.

If you're intention was to check raise bluff thats what you should have done. But sounds like he was last to act and didnt bet, not giving you the opportunity to check raise? But in no way was him saying you got it, a fold.

He still had his hand protected (not mucked) so he is still in hand. By your logic, if you said "I have a Flush", you should of won hand even though you only had Ace high.
He had better hand when everything was said and done, so he wins. You don't get credit for what you were planning to do.

Saying " you got it "

Sometimes speach plays lean on being a bit ignorant. I mean, if I have the nutz, I'm not going to convince the other player he's got it when it's his turn to act. That, to me is being a poor sport. Today I called a river bet with a pair of 7's, and won because I thought my opponent was light... and I was right. He had air. But there was no speach play, and all was the same.

I wrote about this happening before in another thread which discussed showing rules.

https://www.cardschat.com/forum/gen...estion-have-show-not-295285/post-3095633.html

'In a live tournament I called a chap on the river with Ace King believing it to beat his Ace Rag. He said 'you got me' and mucked his cards to the dealer. I showed the Ace King following the show to win rules. In gathering the cards the dealer turned his Ace Rag over and the player said 'oh hang on I missed that I caught bottom pair'.
The Tournament Director was called to the table and declared that the mucked hand was still live and wins the pot. (puke :icon_puke)'.

Yep as mentioned above, if villain still has possession of his cards then he hasn't folded. Technically he hasn't even checked.

I think you fell for an angle shoot on this one.

I agree with everyone, not a fold/muck imo and if he had you beat with mid pair then you lose the pot.

I don't think this is angle shooting. He chose to check back thinking he had a losing hand. He didn't take advantage of the op, just didn't think he would win so didn't want to show his weak hand. Kept his cards rather than mucking just in case he won showdown

Once I played with a hand that I did not understand well, and understood my hand only on the river: X

You're right, it's impossible to tell if it was angle shooting based on the details we have. In fact it's possible he's not - once he sees he has a better hand than OP, if you're angle shooting you're probably supposed to make a bet instead of just showing your winning hand.

But OP doesn't say that villain checked, just that he said "you got me". That can be an angle shoot some players try, saying something that makes their opponent think the action is over when it's not, in the hopes of getting their opponent to expose their hand.

I think he put one over on you here. All he said is "you got me" and sat on his hands and did nothing, didn't muck or say " fold", didn't bet or check. You should have stared him out, 'til he decided to do something

Remember the time Scotty Nuygen said "You call and it 'all gonna be over baby"... that was sick!

Yeah that was, and still is, a thing of beauty :)

Very different to OP's situation though
