How does everyone deal with the Ups and Downs of poker emotionally?
Poker can take you quite a ride, and sometimes its hard to be balanced mentally thought the tough times. Does anyone have any personal stories or advice??

I thought this thread was going to be about an amusement park. I am not the guy to answer this one, I looked 20 years younger than my actual age then I started playing poker and a year later I looked 20 years older than my actual age. That saying about poker being a hard way to make an easy living is as true as it gets.

Poker needs very good psycology. It needs maths. With the addittion of luck it is a dificult combination. It is natural to have many up and down!

Look , it really is a complex question and will depend on each ... really the variance is a nightmare for the players ... I think it is worth researching what the big names of high stakes do, for they must know secret...

Play around 300 freerolls a month and if you still alive, you can get through any downs in the next year!!

Like everything in poker, or life for that matter, there is no secret word, or technique that magically makes everything better. You make progress by working at it. That said, "The Poker Mindset" but Hilger and Taylor specifically targets the OP's problem. It is a good place to start.

Cheers!

Being mentally and physically balanced will help quite a bit when dealing with the pain that goes with losing. It is going to happen! It is not how many times you fall down but how many times you get back up!! Winning will make all the hard times and grinding worthwhile in the long run if you are consistent!

My father used to play poker and get so mad he once broke our glass closet with his head.
For myself I just log out and lay down and watch TV and try to relax.

In early career is normal you get mad at the bad beats. Over time you'll see it's common bad beats. Professional poker players take bad beats all the time and they do not complain. Just go ahead and go to the next tournament.

Lots of awesome answers about the psychological balance that is needed.
What I have done over the years is problerly not the best approach, but it works for me.

When things arent going the best, i tighten my holdings and try and run as many low key tourneys as possible until the variance changes. If that does not work, then i spend a little time away from the tables and try the same strategy again.

Once i see the downslide/bad variance changing, then i will work back up to the buyin level i was before it went sour.

I don't deal with the rollercoaster very well, one of the main reason I made the long term decision not to take poker too seriously, nor base my life happiness on it, or my results. I do play hard when I make an investment into a tourney, but I go into it already not planning on having that money anywhere near my pocket ever again, it helps ease the blow lol
