ROI and hourly are different - if you're trying to make more money then you might accept a lower ROI so you can play more tables and faster structures.

Obviously there are a limited number of hours in a day, so by implication a limited number of hours in any given day that we can be playing poker. Presumably what matters most, therefore, is maximising our hourly rate?

Why are people here so interested in their Return On Investment if it means something different to hourly rate - I'm confused.

This is often so, but it's a generalization. It's not difficult to work out hourly rate for tournaments. ROI for cash games is trickier but also not impossible.

ROI is used to measure profitablity in MTT or SNG. Over a large sample size you know your ROI at those games. You can estimate how many tourneys you play in a month, multiply by the buy-in, then multiply your ROI, you will receive your profit/month. (not include rakeback & bonus).

On the other hand BB/100 (big blind or big bet per 100 hands) are used to measure profitablity in cash game. You should estimate hour many hands you can play per hour (can be increased with multi-tabling), then multiply by your BB/100 to show your hour rate. (without rakeback & bonus).

Hope it helps :)

hourly is how much you make an hr, this can be and should be used for tourneys

roi is how much you make % per tourney

you want to max your win per hour

lets say you could play a hu deep stack sng and your roi was 10% and the tourney took an hr- or you could play hu hyper sng and your roi was 5% but the tourney took 2 minutes- then you would be way better off playing 30 hypers to max your win per hour

Hourly rates on ROI's for cash games shouldn't be done in the first place. It can be done / calculated ofcourse because it just involves math. It is not ideal for poker and definitely not the right approach for being a good or successful at poker. When you sit to play at a cash game table you should be prepared for playing for a long long session.:p
