Hey...I'm new to the site and I am wanting to find out how you determine success in tournaments.

In S&G's, I place an average of 6/10 times. I know that is relatively successful, but it could be improved.

I also play in a lot of $500 free rolls on party poker just to get some practice, and I typically finish within the top 100. How would this translate to success in larger pay tournaments? Can I even judge my tournament success on the $500 free roll due to the number of relatively incompotent players who enter?

Any help would be great.

generally i don't like to consider freerolls real tournaments - the play at those things is just ridiculous most of the time
Not that winning them is an easy task - it takes a pretty decent player to win them consistently, but most of the time it also takes alot of luck to go far in them because people play like such donks. AK doesn't always hold up to QJ :/

Placing in SnGs %60 of the time is great - don't change whatever you're doing now :)

Have to agree with Chuck with this question. Chuck is one of our top players and won't steer you in the wrong direction.

I get what you are saying. I play the free rolls to help me gain experience and patience when playing with smaller stacks in tournaments. Would you recommend against playing in free rolls due to the fact that most people playing in them are willing to give away their chip stacks?

I just want to give my two cents here because I also play at Party Poker and I play the freerolls. I completely agree with what Chuck is telling you. However, the reason I play them is to improve my play. I'm sure you know very well the frustration you can get watching fools go all in every damn hand. I find this a great test of my patience and keep on my gameplan.

I've learned that lack of patience can kill you on the internet because people call almost every down almost every hand. That's why I started doing the free rolls. It is a free exercise in futility, and it is paying off because I am being a lot more patient and waiting for the right starting hands. Now I just gotta translate it to a cash game.

Freerolls

First post, so take it fwiw. I avoid freeroll tourneys like the plague. I sincerely believe they were hurting me more than helping... You're in a tourney where 20% of the people go all-in on the first 2 hands and another 30% hit the "sit out" button and go grab a beer. Plus, I tend to go nuts when some jerkoff calls my 1x and 2x pot bets with a draw and hits it on the river. That doesn't happen nearly as much when you have to pay to play :)

I find myself playing much more aggressively in freeroll tournaments, just because I can. Jump back to $10 SnG tourneys and I'm still in aggro mode and not playing the high percentage odds that I should be. So, I avoid the freerolls now.
