I play in a small hold'em tournament group and we've had some disagreements about rules for raising.

We all pretty well agree that a raise pre-flop should be at least double the big blind.

What everyone disagrees on, however, is the three bet etc as well as post-flop betting.

Does the pre-flop three bet have to be double the initial raise (x<2X big blind) ... so for example if the blinds are 50/100 and the first raiser makes it 200 does the next raiser have to make it 400 or what?

Also, after the flop, what are the rules or guidelines for raising?

Thanks

If I'm correct the betting has to go by the big blind so no less than the BB per bet and you then can raise to anything as long as each bet is at least the BB

Ex. Blinds 50/100 the first raise can be anything 200+ say 250 then the next raise would have to be at least 350 but can be any amount more u want

And I believe some places (Europe) has a rule where u HAVE to double the last bet in order to raise I saw it watching the WSOPE hope it helps

This is also a discussion at our game on leaque night that comes up quite often.
I have done some research on this in the past few months, and have come up with tropwens logic.
They are correct as far s I can see for rules in holdem and anything I can find.
Where we have the problem is they believe that it has to be double the bet amount. say if blinds are 50/100 and bettor makes it standard three bet to 300 they have to make it at least 600 for a raise.
I donot think this is the case and am in the process of printing out documents to show the league.
If it is the case will someone please post me a link.
Thanks.

This type of questions are kind a delicate in the great game of poker. I can say that the best way for resolving this mistery for house game is to consult web site of some famous poker site as pokerstars or partypoker, how thay softver work. On PokerStars you have to make double blind bet minimum as a first bet, no metter when and raise should be also double bet or plus.

If it's NLHE then it's what Tropwen said..

What you said about the WSOPE it could have been fixed limit holdem.

All games that I have played in require the first pre-flop bet to be at least double the big blind. The 3bet would need to at least double the prior raise. So it the big blind were 100, a raise would have to be up to 200 (ie a bet of. 200, raise of 100). The 3 bet would have to go to 300 minimum (an additional 100 raise) and could not just go to 250, for example.

50/100 and the first raiser makes it 200 and does the next razor have to make it 400? In france and some of the European countries that actually is the rule. But not in America. Me personally if I raise its usually 2 1/2 times the big blind. And if I reraise its usually half the pot or the pot.

*le sigh*

Sorry, but there's a lot of wrong information in this thread. FWIW dragonfly has it right. The rule in all situations is that a raise has to be at least the size of the previous bet or raise.

Here's an example that will hopefully clear it up:

- Preflop, blinds are 50/100
- Folded to MP, who wants to raise. He has to make it at least 200 (ie: 100 more than the big blind of 100)
- He decides to make it 300 though, because he's old school and doesn't believe in this minraising nonsense the kids are doing these days. Notice that's a raise of 200 on top of the 100 bet by the big blind.
- It's then folded to the button, who decides that he wants to reraise. He has to make it at least 500 (not 600), because 300 (the size of the bet to him) + 200 (the size of the previous raise) = 500. He makes it 500.
- Everyone else folds because minraises are scary, hand over.

Here's the relevant section of Robert's Rules - you're looking at Rule 6 in particular: http://www.homepokertourney.com/roberts-rules-of-poker.htm#BETTING_AND_RAISING

For what it's worth, I have heard of some bar leagues and other games going with a flat "double the previous bet" rule in the name of simplicity and helping people who don't want to do maths (ie: 50/100, someone raises to 200, minimum raise is then to 400, so on) but what I've outlined above is the 'correct' way.
