I have to vote for Phil Ivey.
Actually I would to ask you who is the worse :D ?

This thread come from commercial add that Challenge UK run with Chris Moneymaker and what they say there "Chris Moneymaker was amateur poker player ....blabla" Statement was is really funny IMAO he still is amateur who get lucky one time but if you call him a pro he definitely is the worse.

I dont know about best or worst since i havent really followed anyone enough for that.

My favourite is gus hansen though. He makes poker fun for me to watch and play. Although i cant play in his style, i like his approach. People say hes loose or gets lucky but thing is he usually plays the odds. When he has the right odds to call wih rags, he will. WHen theres a gamble to be made he takes it. Gotta respect him for that. And he makes GREAT laydowns.

It's really hard to pick the best player in poker. You have the guys like Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu who are the best at reading people. Gus Hanson is definantly the best at calculating and playing the odds. Cchris Ferguson has the best disipline. Mike Matusow and Tony G and Jennifer Tilley are good at controlling a hand. Then guys like Johnny Chan and Phil Helmuth who are good all around players.

With that said my favorite player would have to be Chris Ferguson. He is disiplined and has the look that intimidates even people like Tony G. He knows his poker.

Now for the worst poker pro I would have to disagree about Moneymaker. Even though he is hugely overrated he's still pretty good at poker and is still fixing holes in his game. Although I couldn't really pick the worst player there are several that I would like to nominate. Phil Laak, even though he;s amusing to watch I dont think he's that great of a player. Luck is on his side and he takes advantage of it. Even though I put Mike Matusow on my best list I would also have to put him on my worst list too. He is one of the best at controlling a hand with tilt but he also puts himself on tilt. His emotins take control and he loses a lot. Greg Raymer is also another that should of stayed at the amateur level and played only to buy a new car or pay for his next vacation.

I know you probably wasnt lookig for such a detailed answer but for some reason I woke up at 5am and I'm extremely bored and the only thing I'm good at with poker is knowing the pros :D

Phil Laak one of the worst, really? I think Phil Laak plays a pretty good TAG game. I definitely think he's better than Moneymaker.

Best player in poker right now has to be Phil Ivey. I know it's the standard answer, but it's the standard answer for a reason. There's also a reason so many pros agree that he's currently the best in the game. For there to be so many people with a consensus on a "best player" in a game like poker, where it's much harder to truly dominate than almost any other sport or competition, is a testament to how incredible of a player Ivey is. I don't really have to explain why. He's an amazing reader and he puts tremendous amounts of pressure on his opponent and always seems to know the right time to do so.

Negreanu is my favorite player, and I think he's just slightly below Ivey as one of the best players out there. I've seen him have lots of awful, awful luck since his incredible 2004; I think he's played better than his success and earnings have showed.

I just dont think Laak is very good. He waits until he has a dominate hand. Thats not a bad thing but he cant control a hand with medium pair or rags like Ivey, Chan or many others.

I do like Ivey and Negreanu because they both can tell when they have the best hand. I've seen Negreanu tell people exactly what they have down to the 7 or 8 kicker :D

Really nice post Jimbo :) Negreanu is good player IMAO but only in tournaments saw him several times in "High Stick Poker" show and he was losing every time and big. Dunno maybe had bad luck and didn't saw when he win  he just can't stop himself from raise with brick of 50 000$

cheers /atk

Negreanu really did have loooads of terrible luck in High Stakes Poker. He flopped the nuts and second nuts so many times but kept getting outdrawn. He flopped set over set vs. Gus Hansen, but lost to a 1-outer on the turn that gave Gus quads! It was like a $600k pot. I think Negreanu is a good cash game player, just had some awful luck.

Outside of his wsop win, I'm not sure I've ever seen Chris Moneymaker play at all. When you're comparing how good he is to other players, where are you seeing him play?

Really? You think raymer winning the 2004 WSOP ME & then placing top 27 in 2005 was the showcase of an amateur?

Favorites - Laak, Negreanu, Matusow, Gavin Smith, Lane Flack, Ivey

And although I dislike phil helmuth jr a lot, some of the gear changing & psychology i've seen him bring into hands is pretty amazing. There is talk in FToP about the levels of thought:

1. Your cards
2. Your opponents cards
3. What your opponent thinks you have
4. What your opponent thinks you think they have

and helmuth is definetly at level 4+. no doubt some other players are - but some of the stuff i've seen him do is pretty sick.

Jen is like 50. Cute yes, but I like then a little younger. Ng's Ok, ( I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating crackers), but for some reason between the 2 I prefer LIz. Mercer's a little cutie too, she can reraise me any time.

I think part of Moneymaker's problem was how much he's changed since winning it in 2003. I read his book and it talked about how much he and his wife were struggling before the tournament. He wasnt going to play, his dad and friend bought shares in his entry fee so he could pay his mortgage, etc. After winning, he signed the big sponsorship deal with poker stars, seperated from his wife, and started living the poker pro lifestyle. He's a different player than he was in 2003.

"Outside of his WSOP win, I'm not sure I've ever seen Chris Moneymaker play at all. When you're comparing how good he is to other players, where are you seeing him play?"

I've seen him on a the Poker Superstars invitational and the WSOPs in 2004-2006. For evidence of how he changed, in 2004, he partied all night and showed up hungover to Day 1. He didnt last long. Moneymaker got me into poker, I loved the guy in 2003. I hope he gets it all together again...

Ivey and Cunningham.

If it was for "best to watch", I'd say Farha, Tony G, and Hellmuth

I always watch Gus Hansen on final tables, i wonder how he plays in early and middle stages to get there. On final table you feel like hes ready to go broke anytime, but theres no way he plays like that all tournament! or is there...

Fwiw, Doyle Brunson said on an internet radio show within the past week or two that he thinks Chip Reese is the best, and Phil Ivey might become the best.

yep...all this Chip Reese is the best stuff comes from him winning the 50k horse at the wsop......I think it is an achievement, but to come to that conclusion from one tourney would be wrong

Welly I think you may be a little misinformed about Chip Reese to say that all this talk about him being the best player in the world just because of the 50,000 HORSE tourny.

He has won 2 WSOP braclets before the HORSE (in 78 and 82, both for 7 card stud I believe). So he now has 3 braclets total. Granted there are people who have more.

One more thing to consider is that he is also the youngest person to ever be inducted in the Poker Hall of Fame.

I'm not saying he's the best, because I think trying to decide who is the best poker player is impossible as there are many fantastic players who all excel at different areas or different games.

My personnal favorites however are Gus Hanson and Danial Negranaeu. Hanson because it is like watching a computer operating in a lunatics head. And Negraneau because of the table chatter and the way he makes the table fun, not to mention how he has the uncanny ability to read people that I dream of having.
