I got this and wondered just who the opponents are. I can find nothing relevant via google other than some obscure references to anti-gambling zealots. Not relevant.

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Dear Dennis,
You probably know about our win this summer in the U.S. House Financial Services Committee. By a bipartisan vote of 41-22, the Congress passed out of committee a bill that will create a safe and regulated U.S. market for online poker.
What you may not know is that a small, but loud group of anti-poker zealots are re-doubling their efforts to stop us from succeeding this fall. That’s why we need your help.
Will you join the PPA to help us secure your right to play online poker?
Skilled poker players know that you have take advantage of optimal situations and an opponent’s weaknesses. We’re in just this position now. This summer we scored a big win for the millions of Americans who enjoy online poker. But this win is just the first step. Though our opponents’ chip stack is low, they’re not out and they have pledged to fight even harder this fall.
We don’t need much from each individual poker player, but we need every one of us on the team to win. For just $20 you can be part of the team and make a huge difference.
Can you help make a difference by joining the PPA today!
Millions of people just like you and me enjoy playing poker on the Internet. In fact, for generations, Americans have enjoyed poker. It’s an American game. Poker is broadcast on television stations across America and is as popular as ever.
But a small handful of zealots want to prevent you from enjoying this uniquely American pastime. With our win this summer, they know we’re making progress and they’re fighting even harder.
That’s why your membership is so critical. The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) is our advocacy arm in Washington, DC and in state capitols around the country. But we can’t be effective without your help. Please join the PPA today!
Poker pros like Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer, Chris Furgeson, Andy Bloch, Greg Raymer, Barry Greenstein, and Vanessa Rousso have all joined the fight by joining the PPA for a $20 membership.
Will you join them and over one million PPA members who are standing together for our rights as poker players? For your $20 membership the PPA will fight on your behalf against those who want to restrict your right to play America’s game.
Please click here to join the PPA today.
Congress appears on the verge of properly regulating online poker and generating billions of dollars for our hurting national and state budgets all while safeguarding our children and others from predatory practices. But they won’t do this without hearing from us through the PPA.
As a member of the PPA you will receive exclusive updates with detailed and timely information on our progress. We need you on our team. Pease join the PPA today.

Thanks,

Poker Players Alliance

PS – With our legislative win this summer, we’ve developed some real momentum. National newspapers like the Wall Street Journal and New York Times are reporting our progress. But we won’t be able to succeed without you. Please join me today as a member of the PPA. For just $20 you can make a difference. Join the PPA today.

Gramatical errors like these always make me even more skeptical when someone is asking for money. That and the use of the word zealots make me this is a scam for sure.

 That sentence looks fine to me...

I bet the small but vocal anti poker zealots are tied to the Mormon church in at least 2 ways.

(1) There is nothing wrong with that sentence.

(2) The sentence says nothing about taking advantage of people, it refers to a poker skill where you exploit a players weakness to your advantage to win a game. They are using that poker related idea as an example of where they are right now with legislation, and that they need to "strike while the iron is hot".

(3) It's not a scam. The PPA is real, and the membership fees pay for the costs involved with lobbying.

OK. I guess the PPA is real and not a scam. My apologies. I'm not from the USA.

To end the derail...

I think the sentence would make sense it if was written like...

Skilled poker players know that you have to take advantage of optimal situations and an opponent's weaknesses.

Or even..

Skilled poker players know that you take advantage of optimal situations and an opponent's weaknesses.

Yes, I know. I was just rephrasing the sentence in a different context to show how it doesn't make any sense.

end derail/

PPA is very legit, you can see almost every major pro at wsop, WPT etc. wearing PPA patches as they try to raise awareness on poker legislation. They spend a lot of time lobbying Congress to legalize and regulate online poker in the US.

Did they send you this by email or something? That's not something I would expect them to do.

I know some brick and mortar casinos (particularly Commerce Casino in LA) are vocal opponents of the bill, but I don't know that they'd qualify as "anti-poker zealots".

1)Yes, there IS a problem with the sentence. "You have take"? It's either "have to take" or "have taken". I'm going with the former (the fix is mine).

2)Those links look suspicious. Put your cursor on them and look at the bottom left corner of your browser. Looks fishy, but I could be wrong. I'm a member of the PPA and I don't remember ever getting such an aggressive email from them or one that asks for money.

3) As for the "anti-poker zealots": I'm not sure, but here's the real PPA website for browsing... http://theppa.org/

DJ I sent you a PM with several links for info on the oppponents.

As for "The Stick", ok you are right, there is a word missing there ! doh

The links do look odd now that you mention it, the real PPA is a .org not a .com

The PPA is very real, and I too am a paying member. It is to poker players what the NRA is to gun owners. If you value your rights as a poker player, you should join the PPA just like if you value your rights as a gun owner you should belong to the NRA.

That said, I agree that that email and those links look a bit fishy. Go directly the PPA's website if you intend to join. Don't do so from a random email with bogus looking links.

The main anti-poker zealots I'm concerned about are certain representatives of the state and federal legislature. They are the ones the PPA are mainly fighting. That and the Commerce over their anti-online-poker legislation position.

I have found some of the villains, thanks to FX.

There is little on the web other than video's of these folks, and some of the Congressional (Congress and the House) reps whose support they need.

These folks all spoke with decency and conviction. This whole issue will not be easily solved.

However, those same villains, most who brought up something about saving the children, are more than willing to screw you and me in order to 'save the children'.

Kids are good, when properly cooked.........

The card casino place in california is trying to get online poker banned. I got an e-mail from PPA about it. I recommend joining the PPA for any player that enjoys online poker in the USA. They tried passing a law here in MA to make online poker illegal and because of PPA that legislation changed.

--just checked that link out it's pretty cheesy. and as far as i remember i never paid for membership but donations are accepted.

I'd run a virus scan on your HD now, just to be sure.
