Unfortunately the Dallas Police raided one of the better poker rooms here in Big D recently.

The room was pretty well managed with a decent following. Recently one of our classless and poorly produced local media news teams did a COVERT report on poker rooms in Dallas.

They had their belt cameras, the lapel cameras, the camera pens, etc. Big production with very little substance, but it did what I assumed it would.

The bible thumpers and soccer moms went to city hall to chastize the worst city counsel and mayor in the United States to "PUT THEIR FOOT DOWN".

Little children are being snatched up by dirty predators, stores and banks being robbed, meth labs, arson, not to mention the TERRORIST problem. The Dallas police department is the worst paid, over-worked, poorly funded, unsupported, and over extended law enforcment agency in North Texas.

They have so many issues with racism in the ranks, bad leadership, inept city government, and crime that these morons that forced the Kings and Queens of rediculousness to stress importance on Vice and Swat teams to go after the poker rooms (some of which have been in operation before Doyle was a celebrity) don't realize that they are a bigger head ache for this city than poker players.

The better rooms are now shutting down. This creates the roving poker room. The roving poker room creates the gangster hit, violent crime, and many other social issues this soapbox would take an hours to voice.

Ofcourse there is a group in Houston working in vain to get poker legalized in Texas, but I have a better shot a being the cream filling of an oreo cookie sandwich with the Coors Light Twins than they have of getting their measure looked at.

For the local the only safe game for live poker is the chump games with your friends, the 4 hr trips to Shreveport,LA or the Indian casinos in Oklahoma which are closer but have crap entertainment, crap game selection, and 3-2 beer. The police in Oklahoma love the Ticket. They right them with joy like the super nerd doing a thesis on who's a better captain Kirk or Picard.

Oh man what can ay do.

ohh... apparently. I thought so too... But a Google search on that gives out a couple of today's results. I guess, the police raid did not go unnoticed.

Poker is legal in Texas as long as the host does not take a rake or profit from the game.

You would think it would be a good idea to open a bar and use alcohol, food, and merchandise sales to pay your dealers, insurance, lawyers, security, lenins, inventory, etc.

The bottom line there is the sales from that wouldn't cover these expenses. Thus making it a bad business venture and the reason this type of business doesn't exist.

Without the rake there's no profit, and where there's no profit there's no investment.

Several times legalized gaming has come up in Texas, but the lobbyists for casinos, lottery, horse racing, and bingo (largely sponsored by our good friends in the Religious community) along with conspiracy junkies always find a way to defeat it. Ofcourse what makes it easy on them is the fact that the majority of the people that would support legalized gambling here would rather watch reruns of the Duke's Of Hazzard while mass consuming Twinkies and whoppers washed down by cheap 18 packs of Natural Light beer than roll their gelatinous carcass to a voting booth.

ok so i just read this thread. and well while I agree wit hthe original commentors sentiments and frustrations of poker in texas, I want to shed some truth and light on the subject matter.

1. Dallas Poker is not dead.
2. Aces Poker Room off of 35 and motor whose raid caused alot of commotion was a newcomer to the dallas poker scene. the owner was a transfer from a club that was raided in arligton or the midcities some time the year before. the old school places that have been out there for ages are still around. Aces was only open for ...well not even a year. so to lump it in with the places doyle used to visit is ludicris. I think the problem that you are having is that alot of the new rooms that sprung up during the poker boom are shutting down. alot of that is cause before the aces bust the DPD never bothered card rooms... they all new it was safe inside dallas proper(or so they thought) then the aces bust occured and their little security blanket was taken away from them. Aces was an over the top advertiser. they conned their way into becoming the admin of the meetup.com dallas poker group and spammed people from there ... they would send out daily emails about how great their games where. the guy was a marketer plain and simple. he did not do things subtley...... he was after the quick big buck. the other rooms that shut down were also new additions in the past year and also places that would advertise on the internet etc. some more than others. I could list 15 places that are still up and running in dallas. some of them have been there for 5+years... and i doubt you ever heard of them except jackies and redmans. why cause they dont advertise. you want more real facts etc .. I suggest you hit the people up that run this site in dallas : www westonpoker com

3. Christians... christians are not the all powerful group they once where. the people that are really fudning the prevention of legal gambling in texas are our neighbors to the north and east... yep that is right the big lobby dollars are coming from oklahoma and lousianna. those two states and the casino operators would lose everything if texas legalized gambling. why is it that oyu think that winstar and choctaw are right on the texas border? to serve the southern oklahoma community ... lol... hell no its to serve DFW(dallas Fort-worth for those of yall not familiar with the area).... i love how people blame the christians for thier "problems"... same peopel blame the christians for what happened in washington... ignoring the FACT that is was the LIBERAL DEMOCRATS that pushed the antionline gambling bill through in that state. why cause of lobbying dollars etc coming from the casinos of that state... it makes me sick that the representatives we vote in do what lines their pockets and not what the people want. and just so there is no mistaking ...I am a democrat and i have not been to church sense my parents made me as a child.

4. this is a small thing in your post ... you mention drinking at the casinos with 3-2 beer.. they dont allow drinking .. have you ever been there? they are morally objecting to it...no booze what-so-ever. (i will say that one of the guys at the above mentioned site westonpoker, said that winstar has applied for a liqour license, and that the reason for that is that they have to bow to the almighty dollar... )

5. the legality of poker in texas is .... well not legal... unless played in a private HOME(it says private place in the law books but really that means home). and no BENEFIT or PROFIT can be made by the host in anyway. the reason that you dont see cards being dealt at the local pub is not case they cant take a rake.... its cause if they dealt cards with no rake they would have to stop selling everything else while that game was running. see the lawmakers consider selling a hotdog/beer/froo-froo-drink/t-shirt to a guy playing a card game to be a financial benfit to the establishment and thus makes it illegal. you will see the APL events take place and the bars love them... but guess what the APL has no money involved in the game. thus removing that aspect of legality.

sorry for the long post ... just wanted to shed soem real light on this subject.

Uhm....I was obviously using some sensative material for set ups with my jokes........that's what I do I make jokes.........as for aces I only played there a few times but lumped it in as most of the people on here aren't from Dallas and could give two shizzles about it........I was just making some banter on what I considered a fun post as I haven't posted enough here and felt like being a part of the gang.......I am amazed that most of the time I throw off the wall gardage on the walls and people feel the need to take it personally.........as far as poker in Dallas goes give me a heads up on a place to play I hate driving North and East......

Chip, I hear this argument all the time. That our tax dollars are better spent chasing perverts and serial killers. Why do I get a speeding ticket when there are child molesters running around? Why did I get busted for having a joint in my pocket at a tailgate party when M13 is selling crack on the streets? The simple answer is that it's illegal. Imagine what would happen if all the garden variety of crimes were ignored until all the "Real" criminals were behind bars. Sorry, but the truth of the matter is that law enforcement has an obligation to enforce the statutes as they are written and in your face violations like illegal card rooms are the low hanging fruits.

PS- Nice post by Dallas. I hope he comes back.
