Hi everyone!
I've been recently hearing such opinions that Dota for ex. is new/modern chess. How could be this even possible? (IMHO):eek: I won't compare a million-years old creation and computer game. However, there is a bunch of people that say the same about poker and chess.
So, making long story short, what is your opinion:
Could poker be somehow compared to chess? In what way?

As for me, I would stand for chess, that it's more difficult than poker and the importance of luck in chess is reduced to minimum, however I enjoy playing both. If u want and know how to play, we can play chess with u as well as poker!:)
Looking forward for your opinions!

Poker is a game with incomplete information. In chess all the pieces on the board are visible.

For me these are completely different games. Chess is a game all about analytical strategy, poker is about decision-making based on math and information about your opponent. It's kinda hard to compare these games.

Both games require evolving strategy.
Both games include statistical concerns.

Chess is not a game.

Dota and Poker are games where there is a combination of raw strategy (like in chess) and guesswork (what will my teammates do, what will the enemy do how should i best counterbuild them etc for Dota and in poker it's how to I adapt to their style?)

Tournaments are even less chess-like as the ending of a tournament is a totally different game itself to early-tournament poker and cash game poker and when it hits final 3 or headsup, the game is literally not at all strategic but instead TACTICAL ONLY and it is this that makes Dota and Poker different to chess, that at the very top level or ending of a big match, there is such high brutal variance/luck that the game becomes pure tactics and chaos rather than definite-optimal methods of play AKA strategy.

If you spend enough time studying chess and have the actual memory capacity for it, you will never ever lose. This is actually the reason why you will never ever see top chess players go against each other and win, it ALWAYS ends in stalemate because at the top level of chess you have players who simply cannot physically lose due to the combinations of moves they do based on their studying of invincible strategies (which do absolutely exist in chess it's just that the next invincible move changes based on the move the opponent makes this doesn't mean there is randomness though).

Chess involves 100% guaranteed draw-or-win moves past mid-way, even computer programs that have solved it to 96% accuracy can say 'there is a 100% win route found due to error opponent made') otherwise they will draw or perhaps lose to a computer that has solved it to the remaining 4% accuracy assuming it can run that many calculations in the time limit for the moves.

No, if you practise it enough and study it enough, you cannot ever lose a chess game if you don't intentionally throw it.

in no way should be compared, since the only thing they have in common is to study their opponent, the mentality of which piece can be moved or not .... but they are two very different sports

Chess is not a sport, there is 100% solvability to it. In other words at the top-top level of poker where everyone is high IQ and dedicated to the game no one ever loses it's simply 'how will we get to stalemate' that they find fun to play for.

Sorry mate but I can't relate your quote to my post.
Do you analyze how a computer analyzes the statistical part of chess while a person plays against it?
Chess is older than computers and calculators.
I'm talking about people playing.

The top chess players tie with or beat top computer programs in chess.

For me, all of them are complety diferent.
Dota is a game that envolves more your skills than your tatics.
Chess is a tatics game.
Poker envolves a lot, not simple to define.

I think both games look alike because to win you have to keep a strategy, but I think poker goes beyond the simple fact that is played for money. Also the chips make poker more attractive.
