I believe patience is my strongest skill and one you cannot teach or learn in pokerschools or in books..

What other skills do you feel poker players need that you cannot teach?

I am always interested in the psychology behind what makes a great poker player, please share your thoughts and opinions with me, whats your greatest skill and what do you need to develop?

Patience goes hand in hand with discipline, which I believe is the most important quality. Having the courage to trust your instincts after you've developed them is also crucial.

Tolerance for pain.

What I mean by this is you must be willing to accept the fact that some days you can play perfectly, zero errors, make all the right moves and still end up with nothing to show for it due bad luck. Worst yet when your misfortunes come at the hands of a player who made an awful play. It hurts really bad but we must be able to take the beat and bounce back next time round.

Hello

Patience is a great quality to have at the poker table. Another good quality to have at the poker table is a short bad beat memory. Forget about the one and two outer's that were hit against you as fast as you can.

Not Really

Ranging opponents can be taught as I recently learned it from my coach . Instinct has little to do with it . Their position , stack ,past hand history , how they played this hand all tell you what he has . Even if he is bluffing . If You are talking about when to Gamble and just call or raise cause you feel lucky yes that is instinct but I don't recommend it unless you are low and desperate or extremely high stacked and willing to risk a few ...

I believe patience can be taught and for many that is the only way they get it . When it comes to poker almost everyone after a few hundred thousand hands will be far more patient then they were after their first 1000 . Reason being is because they LEARNED it from playing or from a coach or just got tired of depositing .

All skills and tools can be taught to most people . Some have a more natural or have already learned part of the things we use as poker players but it can all be taught with the right teacher and enough time . It might only take some a few months or years to learn a certain skill whereas some might take 10 or 20 years but it can be taught . time really depends on how much time you dedicate it and who you get as a teacher

Most start off trying to teach themselves this can take a very long time even with YouTube twitch and other great resources . Those who want to learn faster and usually more successfully will hire a good coach .

Interesting replies and thank you to those who have responded so far..

Disagreeing with me is good, i want debate and opinion and i appreciate all comments, here is also a link to back up one of the replies regarding whether patience can be taught -
https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/your-zesty-self/201109/four-steps-developing-patience

Keep the comments coming guys, sometimes i pop an opinion out there to kick start a conversation and it never ceases to please me when people disagree or offer another viewpoint!

Discipline and equanimity; and being naturally good at math gives a player a huge advantage. One can memorize odds to hit a flush, set, etc., but having a feel, an inherent understanding of the math gives an advantage.

Hi.
Without a doubt, patience is always very important, and not only in poker. But the second very important skill is obviously discipline. If you are not a disciplined player, you will not be a successful player.
Good luck.

That "gut" feeling. I think I lost mine. I was able to make great all-in bluffs, with great timing. For some reason, I cannot pull the trigger anymore. Also, that "I know it's coming" call.

I think there are too many "scared" players out there,,,,(which helps me immensely) i think fearlessness is one of my strongest tools,,,sure you'll get my chips with a good hand, but most times i will steamroll right over you.Be hard to play against(not an all-in idiot,check-raise alot)most players don't want to be embarrassed, look bad,,,,use that.

Patience is a virtue a telling says and it really is true for when I have patience I can make better decisions in any way and looks like time stops and goes very slow I barely can believe it sometimes.

You should abandon the "church" of money!
We all underlie this taught inner feeling, that money is the most important thing on earth!
NOT TRUE!
You have to throw in all of it without a glimp of an eye, whether you are in your BRM or playing above.

patience is a great ability to play poker, but I think luck is the main factor, there is also the time that you play, because this way you learn to have all the requirements that poker teaches.

The one skill I would like to develop is the ability to fold big pocket pairs when some goes "all in" before its your turn to act.
I play poker at the local club and many times I go home shaking my head why "did I call with KK or QQ" knowing the other person is holding and they normally hit that damn ace.

Should one make it a rule to fold pocket pairs and not call with them to stay in the tournament and then hope for better cards at another opportunity.

What your thinking on calling with pockets pairs?
