Poker is rigged, why do people still play this game for a living?

I was playing the other night and another player was throwing chips in the middle and doing the "all-in boogie". I usually dont say anything and keep a bucket handy, but I felt obliged to mention that it was risky to play that way. He said: "Don't you know how to play? You go all in every hand"!
I just told him - "there's more to this game than that."

As far as trying to make a living from playing poker forget it (unless your last name is Hellmuth or Ivey). Too many variables. You can however (if you're careful) ITM often enough to keep your poker site account reasonably filled, and that's all I expect from it. Poker isn't rigged, it just 'takes a lifetime to master'.

why hasn't this been merged yet?

I haven't merged it because it's not the typical rigtard thread screaming that online poker is rigged. Despite having the word "rigged" in the title, the OP seems to be implying that it's not possible to make a living playing poker at all, whether live or online, and treating poker as any other gambling game. While the level of ignorance in those statements is pretty substantial, it doesn't quite approach that of the rigtards. :)

Nobody forces anyone to gamble. Any hobby costs money. I know people who spend over $1k on a 1 or 2 hour trip to shoot at the side of a mountain.

Personally, I've only made money playing poker and have done a lot of good with what I've made. It's the only hobby I know of that pays you back.

Golf is also a hobby that's pays back very well.

You make some compelling points OP. I am going to quit poker tomorrow and check myself into rehab. Thanks for the heads up!

Makes a lot of sense

All you wrote makes a lot of sense. I was telling my wife not long ago that I could make what extra money I needed playing poker online. That was when I was winning. I did make 2 withdrawals. But then I started losing and I'm so addicted to playing all I could think of was to put more money on Full Flush to keep going. Well I'm not completely broke so going to just take it easy and have some fun at a lower level

If I had a dollar for every post like that that I've read, lol

For people who truly believe it's rigged, why on earth are you still playing...and griping about it being rigged? It's like dropping a can on your foot, feeling the pain, complaining about it, and repeating...

Last time I played live NLHE I saw quads three times in less than 20 hands after I sat down. I had one of them and another guy had the other two, and his were sandwiched (quads, off, quads).

Then things calmed down for 20-30 hands, and then we saw a straight flush beat a flush.

So in less than 60 hands, we saw three quads and a straight flush. These things happen from time to time. Just got to roll your eyes and keep making solid plays.

If live play is like that sometimes, and it moves at quarter speed (at least) to online, then of course weird stuff is going to happen from time to time online.

That said...sucks, bro.

I would never play poker for a living. If I won enough money to quit my job I would invest it in something else (maybe start my own business). I would be scared to lose the love of the game. Plus, does anyone know someone personally who plays poker for a living and supports themselves and possibly a family? I would not gamble with my kids future like that.

Lol. Thats an arranged deck.

First of, you have to be vigilant on the dealers. They might be switching decks.

Second, have to cut the deck after use up.

It was in a large casino with lots of security, but yeah, after the second quad, the guy next to me made them wash both decks. After the third quad, he requested new decks and it was honored. It really happened, and it was weird as hell.

IMO it doesn't matter how many times you change decks, from time to time these hands will appear.

So are you saying it is rigged? If so, evidence or GTFO plz. I mean RIGGED not cheaters just to clarify.also, if i misinterpeted that i apologise but if i didnt i stick to my first response.

Yes, I confirm what I said. It's rigged in the form, there are cheaters.

Regards the poker room side y MUST be careful anyway- y must play on good sites, maybe reading feedback around, ect.

I feel very safe on PS.com but loads of people were feeeling safe on FTP few years ago. There are still ppl who lost every(fkn)thing. And FTP was the 2nd worldwide...
590613-pokerscout-poker-liquidity.jpg

The graph shows how the traffic sensibly decreased and it is still going down (obv you must add other factors) after the fatality of the BALCK FRIDAY which hit FTP and American players.
Obv the most ppl think it's rigged, the less people play online, obv. This is monies not candies

At black friday time, I was consdering a poker room as a bank. Honestly I held my full bankroll (living roll included) on a poker site. Fortunately it wasn't FTP. (for the record, atm dont have these problems ;))

I DECLARE I TRUST PS.COM AND FEEL COMPLETELY SAFE PLAYING real money ON IT but

there's always a but, few years ago came out another scandal regarding the poker rooms, and I am saying the BIGS not the random site that open in a day and close in another (I wont be putting money on it. People do. Sometime the loose the capital, sometimes not. I consider them as fools - with no offence.)
Back to the "but" I was talking about:
follow this link and read: http://wickedchopspoker.com/the-ultimatebet-super-user-scandal-part-i/.
and here we talking about Ultimate Bet, Absolute poker and [miss it :( sry] We're not talking about santa Claus Poker room ;)

I play the online poker as far as it began (was the far 2008/09 I started on everest poker) and I ve gone through lots of stuff, believe me, if I STILL PLAY ONLINE means I do NOT consider the online poker RIGGED. Not completely. My experience teaches me I have to be careful where i put my monies.
And this is what I suggest to ya. Do not trust anything inda blind. research, look around, double check and y ll be safe

Does it make more sense to you now??

I guess, everybody hopes they can win a lot money. but it's not true, especially about newbies. But for me, it's a good activity to chill me out. :)

I am mentally tired from threads like this one :D

With poker its same like with anything else. If you have some predispositions which are important when you want to be succesful in poker and you will put a lot of effort to it, you will be winning player. How much money you will be able to make depends on how much effort and time you will put into it. What are those predispositions? In my opinion its above average intelligence, patience, being good in math, not being too much emotional...

But I think even if you are not like that, you can STILL be winning player, but it will takes you much more effort and time to get there. Thats why theres only few % who actually can make serious money with poker. People just give up, everybody wants to make million in one month, If he struggling he just give up...:D

OP you think poker is rigged but its not seriously. It just varies. When your up against good players its you who end up losing more money to them. Also run of cards can vary like for instance in one tournament I had 3 AA in just and hour, but none on another. At one time I tried to bluff a guy in a tournament. So I raised all in in river to steal the pot but guess what. He called with second pair and won. I was thinking like this guy has nuts to call but no. So don't assume winning players always dealt with great hands they don't.

I'm a chess enthusiast, I've invested a lot of time and plenty of money on tournament entries, books/training, travel and accommodation. I've made some of that back. I had a $400 rating prize plus about 3 $75 wins as well as a number of small wins and odd door prizes and stuff. Plus in 2012 I was sponsered $200 for entry into the u18 Australian chess championships to ease some of the cost. And I can tell you that hasn't matched what I've put into it.

Poker on the other hand has probably made me 4 figures profit over the past year and a half and will continue to net me more as I improve and move up.

I guarantee you if I played golf every weekend I would spend a helluva lot more on that "hobby" - with no shot at ever winning any of that money back or getting free rounds of golf because I am so darn good that people want me to play at their course - than I ever spend playing online poker. I also guarantee you that there are thousands and thousands of players out there every week dreaming of making it as a professional golfer, spending thousands of dollars on lessons, clubs, equipment, greens fees, etc., but out of those thousands, only a few hundred ever do it well enough to make a lot of money at it. Every kind of career you can try is a gamble, if you think about it.

Well said.

I find it extremely ignorant when people make assertions such as the OP. Spending money on poker is a no-no but it's just dandy to blow thousands on terrible movies, terrible music, clothes that look terrible on you, alcohol, and rounds of golf every weekend.

I guess OP doesn't understand the concept of an investment and a return on that investment.

EXACTLY ... could not have been stated any better. :)

Poker is NOT RIGGED anymore than "your life" is rigged

Good luck, Wally

:icon_sunn How wise and observant you are. Of course, some people do "think" that their life is rigged. It's a personality trait, a psychological attribute. And not a good one. It's the "Everything happens to me" psychology. A friend of mine had the second best low hand in a hi/lo game and lost. He actually had the thought, "Why is God against me?" He quit gambling.

Just one among many superstitions.

The other day, in the early stages of a freeroll, players were going all-in in droves, every hand. I had KK in the big blind, and couldn't wait to call. I walked. I couldn't believe it. The thought entered my mind that they knew what I had. But I banished that thought immediately. Such things do happen. Aberrations happen. A dodo with a one-out can beat you on the river. Doesn't mean the game is rigged. Even with odds of a hundred to one, sometimes the one comes up. So get rid of those negative thoughts. The day I stop believing in myself and believe instead that some extraneous influence is affecting the game's outcome, is the day I quit. When I lose, there is generally one reason. I made a mistake. I played poorly.

.

For some of us, Poker is a profitable & entertaining hobby.

Poker is gambling, but good players have an edge over bad & Average players.
Play only if you enjoy the game.
If you do not trust online poker, play live.

If you want to win you need to:
Accept that outcomes are largely out of your control, but decisions are not.
Practice making good decisions.
Play only with money you do not need.

Haha!! sounds like a typical losing player online. For one, you have a thing called Variance. You will never win as many hands you think you should. Nor, you dont LOSE as many as you think. Take in account how many hands you play online!!! You have to take outcones and money out of the equation. As long as you made the right play you should be happy with it.
