People choose to enter this game for various reasons and some feel they may want to play for fun or entertainment. Then others feel they may want to advance even further and may want to play for a living live or on line.

To the extent of how far they choose to go with poker is up to each person. The reality of poker many find out is not what they may have envisioned. To be successful at poker takes a lot of time and work to become successful. Most fall short of their own reality for example, when we were all growing up we were told we can be anything we want to be, President, Astronaut, Professional Baseball player etc...

To keep in one's own reality in poker we must realize it takes hard work and many ups and downs along the way and to succeed at any level of poker and it may never happen. This is why most never make it out of the micro level and could possibly develop a gambling problem because most try to chase the dream of either making life changing money or playing professionally.

i think everybody stands a good chance if they follow proper BR management.....although at the beginning of a poker venture, its mighty hard to do that, because you think your abilities are better than what they actually are and therefore risks are taken....in turn confidence gets slashed and you give up......you have to tame the ego to make it.....a very hard thing to do for a new player

Skill certainly is a good thing to have, but BR management is paramount. If you can't manage your BR, you're in for a long, long road to success and a short jaunt to failure.

There are so many "good" players out there that can't get passed their own shadow. They like to play the tables (pit), sportsbook, and play the ponies. Players complain about the house rake, but they never seem to understand the hold the house has on these other games or just don't care cause "that's gambling".

Playing poker is just like any other profession or hobby. You have to put in the time to get what you want out of it. Otherwise, it's just a hobby.

in response to choosing to play poker

In response to playing poker there are 52 cards in the deck
Some people are better at using a system rather, than their mind. So many players, take too many chances. Its quite variable, in poker today, with so many people, from so many backgrounds, all the cards are as being someones favorites. Some days thats why my starting hands, that cover the big pocket pairs, and suited str cards, ect. dont always make it home, but I wont give up on playing poker.br management or not. Too much fancy poker stuff out on the market today.Goodluck to you.:)

I agree that a lot of poker players lose the control of their mind chasing a big win in a tournament or a successful career in cash game and that sad part is that sometimes they are good players, but the psychological factor ruin their possible poker career.

Success is pretty subjective. If a person who has played for years and feels he has been successful even though he hasn't made any money because plays for enjoyment and has had a lot of fun, who am I to argue? I wouldn't call myself a success if that were my situation, but I have no basis to say other people should have similar values.

dude, wait til you have 6 months experience.
You're prob sitting at 2 nl now and every now and again, maybe one on every fee tables, youre seeing a player and thinking "oh yeah he's not bad". You'll come back to 2nl presuming you stick with it improve and move up and think "omg what... He's not good at all :s" I go back to 2nl every now and again for Lols, and there's still regs there who I know from when I was grinding it. These guys have no hope. At least 6 months there and they haven't moved up from 2nl? They aren't going anywhere.

Some people just don't seem to have the capacity to improve. I remember playing against guys at low buy in tourneys in literally my first game ever thinking wow, how does he know he has me beat there! Then a few months later, come back and predict their hand by showdown almost every hand and crush them- and these are people who have been playing for years.

I have no idea what it is that makes good players at this game... But some people just have it And others don't from what I've seen. Hopefully we're all ones with a chance :)

I just love the game and able to grind out around a $100 a month. Enough each year to buy Christmas for my Nephew and his family. And myself a gift or two. Just don't have what it takes to play (risk) big money. But still get a kick out of winning.

haha, tbh ive never thought anybody was 'not bad' lol....i genuinely sit at every table i play at and think i can crush them because they are shit.....tbh im prob just as shit as most of them but my ego holds no bounds.....

i dont know if thats a good or a bad thing haha...

there is no doubt in my mind that i will beat 2nl....that will happen and it will before 6 months.....if i cant do that then i'll fckn just play roullete or somehting.....obv the guys that have been stuck in 2nl dont want to learn the game properly....most of them are russians, and are too pissed on vodka to learn anything....either that they are withdrawing all the time....

but you're right, some people have got it and others not....i think if you are a reasonably bright individual, with a love for the game, with the will to learn, then you are gonna improve greatly all the time......

unless you are said russians/serbians/english who lets be honest, are not the brightest r:D

dam your harsh on other races arent you? I dont fall into any of the catagories but good players can come from anywhere. Remember a little luck beats a whole lot of skill anytime. You can learn the game back and forth but if cards are falling for you, someones grandma with dementia is gonna be playing bingo with your bankroll. ;)
