Following the events of 4/15/2011, poker players, now more than ever, need to come together and demand we be heard. We need strong legislation that protects the rights and efforts of all players, from the casual tournament entrant to the consummate professional earning a living online.

We cannot sit quietly and wait for pokerstars, Full Tilt, and the other off shore companies to fight this fight. We need to speak out for our rights as Americans to participate in these competitions both for fun and for profit. Let us be heard. Comment on our posts. We want to hear from you and keep this conversation alive! Join the cause! YOU ARE THE VOICE!

A website will follow soon to aid you in contacting your local and state legislators.

The White House also has a web page you can use to submit comments:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact

This is my first (and not my last) sent this am:

I strongly object both to the UIGEA, which I consider an unjust, hypocritical law and to the DOJ's actions on Friday to limit my ability to enjoy my hobby from the privacy of my own home. As a taxpayer, voter and American citizen, I feel my rights as a free person were violated in 2006 by the actions of Bill Frist in attaching the UIGEA to the Safe Harbor Act in an effort to limit free trade and to impose the morals of the religious right on all Americans.

The exceptions to this law are extensive and hypocritical. No one cares if a little old lady spends her entire social security check on lottery tickets, where her chances of winning are ridiculously low and the "rake" is 50%. But if I want to pay $1.20 to play a tourney online, someone feels I need to be protected from myself.

Poker, as a game of skill, needs to be given an exception to this onerous law.

Thank you for any relief you can give to millions of Americans who are now deprived of their right to play with players around the world. Imagine the irony that I can no longer play with Iranians, Chinese or Russians. Where is the America I was brought up to believe was commited to personal freedoms?

I agree.. and what about the casino's loading up busloads of senior citizens on the first of the month to take them to the casino's "for free".... where they spend money they cant afford and wait for hours for the bus to leave, broke and staring into space. I've seen this myself and it makes me sick. But I guess that's cool....Uncle Sam does'nt want online poker because he does'nt know how to corrall it to his benefit and untill he figures it out, were all screwed.

I say we do a march right up to the capitol!

We play poker online, in cyberspace.. but we need to stand up together and protest by setting a date for as many of us who can and who will dare, to gather and march right up to the White House. We need to make our voices be heard. We need to be seen, and counted. Just because we play online, doesn't mean we don't live in the real world. I don't think they really expect anyone to protest. It wouldn't suprise me if they are counting on us not standing up together to be heard!

I say lets do a protest march soon!

Online poker is an international game and as such I feel that this fight should be fought along international as well as national lines (Players from the USA are not the only ones fighting stupid poker laws.)

All poker players should be calling for an international standard with a view to achieving consistent consumer protection and regulations for online poker.

I may be just a dumb fish on the tables but I reckon respective governments should be taxing the rake and juice generated by their own constituents (at a rate of about 30%) and NOT taxing poker winnings. (A sort of "FORCED" partnership with the poker sites)

It is the poker player that is taking all of the risks and it just seems to me to be the only fair way to tax poker, governments can get their tax fix while online poker sites and their customers get stability and a level playing field globally.

In relation to casino games the game of poker is a special case and should be regulated as such.

I am willing to be talked out of this point of view if someone has any better ideas.

Stole this from a web page comment, something I hadn't really thought about before.

The whole reason a world series of poker can actually exist is due to the skill element. You don't see any World Series of Slot Machines because it just wouldn't make any sense. Games of chance are not fun to watch because there is no way for anyone to be better than anyone else.

Sounds good... until you think about how well shows like Deal or No Deal rate. Games of chance can be plenty of fun to watch, it's all just in how they're packaged.
