Lately I've been noticing how many poker phrases and terms are in common use, even by people who have never played and by some who actually disapprove of the game.

I was recently on the campaign committee of a highly controversial candidate. When we were discussing strategy, one of gals on the team, who happens to totally dismiss my interest in poker, said, "Well that's our ace in the hole.' I looked at her and said, "You know that phrase comes from poker, right?" Her haughty response was, "It does not, for goodness sake."

Hilarious?! I'll say. Anyway, that got me to wondering how many more such phrases are used so frequently that people no longer associate or have no clue about the connection.

In addition to "ace in the hole", the following come immediately to mind:

--when the chips are down
--he called her bluff
--she has that down pat
--he plays his cards close to his chest
--we don't want to tip that hand yet
--be careful because he always has a card or two up his sleeve

Any more that anyone can think of?

I have used.
"Tilting" on more than one occasion.
There are tons of sayings that could equally represent poker,or any form of cards really.

That's what I'm after--a list of them. :)
Here's another I came across today:

The witness wasn't laying all his cards on the table, so the cops couldn't tell what kind of hand he was playing.

If someone wants to be a part of something, I hear "I'm All In!" pretty regularly...

This is in poker home games so it doesn't really count, but the "Degree All In Moment" is used a lot as well! Adveristing dollars well spent don't ya think?

Yes, and matter of fact I have heard people say "I'm all in" or "I'm in" since the poker explosion that began in 2003. Before that they used to say "count me in" which isn't quite the same...

Hmmm, hadn't really thought about this before, how's about:
  • folded under pressure
  • passing the buck

Wonderful, bazerk! Yep, you're right--the button used to be called the "buck" and was passed around to indicate the dealer. Nowadays that phrase means abdicating responsibility.

And folding under pressure certainly applies.

More:

--Whenever the Vice Mayor is stretching the truth, she gives off a tell--her neck turns red. Another version: how her neck turned red when she said that was very telling.

--What are we going to do now? Our competition upped the ante again.

I hear so many people say: "that's sick, sick move, ur sick". I've only heard people starting to say this word after the big poker explosion of nineteen-diggity-two.

I mite start to say "I'm all-in baby!!" when i'm at the bank and depositing money :D:D:D

When you die you "cash in your chips"

When you think someone is lying you "call their bluff"

Here's one from the President of the US, who is purported to be an excellent poker player, on 60 minutes tonight. As the interview was winding down, at the last minute the staff thought of an important question they had forgotten to ask. He smiled and said, "Good catch".
