Greetings card chatters. This is my first post but I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks.Great forum!I've been playing poker about 1 month and I'm really enjoying learning this great game.As a 50 year old guy I harbor no illusions of future poker greatness, lol. My goal is to become a strong 3-6 to 5-10 fixed limit player casino and maybe 1-2 fl online, that's basically it with respect to cash games. Will likely never play NL cash games but I will try tournaments. With these goals in mind I put together a "curriculum" For limit its Lee Jones WLLH , Ed miller's SSH and poker academy pro,for tourney prep it's HOH and the little green book. After 3 reads of Lee Jones and a few thousand hands on the academy trainer I was beating the bots so I tried .25-.50 fl on FT last night after 4 hours I lost 10 bucks, I did not feel over matched, was I beaten by the rake?

Variance. Try playing two tables and spread your bankroll a bit. Rake is always a problem with FL.

Are you sticking to a strict guide to starting hands? Normally when I have losted in long sessions this is the contributing factor.

Actually if you bought in for just $10 and played for 4 hours you are probably doing okay.
I have seen many new players sit down for the first time and lose much more than that.
Hopefully you kept a hand history for the session.
If you did, I would recommend going back over both your winners and losers to see where you can correct your game.

Any questions, we have a Cash Game Hand Analysis forum we you can post a particular hand
and get some advice as to what you can do to fix your leaks.

Hope this helps and welcome to CC

Welcome rednose. As a guy who started playing at 50, I must assure you that poker greatness is hard to come by....lol.

But seriously, it sounds like you are thinking and reading, and ready to learn. I have been a deep sea diver for over 25 years, and I remember when a 62 year old guy got his open water license, and a year later his advanced divers license. Hey, us old guys can still rock!! So keep an open mind, stick here, read, ask and analyze, and you will be showin the kids how its done..... uhhh... in theory...

Good luck!

edit: Just read Leos post, and, yea, you made it 4 hours with 10$, you are not doing so bad, and a player for 1 month, I would expect you to be broke in the first hour.......... so hang in there, your in a great place to learn. And ditto Leo on hand posting, a great tool!

You really can't tell much with one session. Play for a few weeks, then see if a pattern is showing a weakness in your game.
