Phil Gordon's books are easy to understand and have lots of great information. Also, David Sklansky's books on the Theory of Poker and Advanced Theory of Poker are well worth reading, more than once.

I have a couple of shelves of poker books, including all of those mentioned so far except Harrington's cash books.

My highest recommendation for cash games is Professional No-Limit Hold'em and for SnG's I like Moshman's SnG Strategy. The latter is geared more to single-table SnGs but much of it applies to any tourney situation. I'm currently split between both of these books and have finished neither, but both are excellent. I started reading PNLHE when I was still playing cash a lot, but then switched to tourney/SnG play and started Moshman's book.

Sklanksy/Malmuth books are generally more advanced and dry compared to the others mentioned, so beginners typically won't get as much from them. I think they're a lot more useful upon re-read and after your game improves.

The books that Ed Miller writes or collaborates on are usually good too, including his latest eBook which I hear is a bargain at $99 -- and if you think that's expensive, there are lesser eBooks by others that sell for several hundred. This'll probably be my next poker book purchase.

for my first post. im reading every hand revealed by gus hansen, havent finished it yet but pretty far in the book. its not like the other poker stragtegy books, its more like a journal on how he won the 2007 aussie 1.2 million. he goes through the all the hands he played analysing them and how he felt during the hand and after each day. so far its a very good read and i highly recommend it!

Um to me super system is about the best for NLHE IMO.
I personally love all the harrington on holdem books as well.
For LHM I found a great book called Small stakes holdem, and it really improved my limit game.

If you want to read something a little bit different try: "Poker Tournament Formula" by Arnold Snyder. You don't have to agree with everything he says but it will get you to think about poker strategy with a different prospective.

The Joe Navarro (FBI) book on tells ("Read 'em and Reap") is an excellent book to help your live game. I like it better than Caro's book because it's more scientific and less egotistic.

I only have 5 poker books in my home library, which I feel are the only ones essential for me.

Super System (The Old Testament)
Super System II (The New Testament)
Harrington on Hold Em Trilogy (Early Tournament, Late Tournament, and Workbook)

One of my favorite books is "Online Ace--A world series of poker Champion's Guide to Mastering Internet Poker" by Scott Fishman. He covers just about everything about online play in a clear and actually entertaining manner--BR management, basic strategy, SnGs, MTTs, multi-tabling, etc.

Gus Hansen's cover blurb reads: "A great book for the beginner, the immediate, even the seasoned pro. Scott Fishman's wisdom will dramatically improve your chances of making the final table."

Harrington on Hold'Em (1,2,3) I think is the most complete book. You should try it

Harrington's tournament series are great. Vol 3 is a book of "problems" that let you work through what you learned and analyze your decisions. I haven't read the cash game series yet, but they are on my winter months reading list.

Books for brains

David Sklansky's books on the Theory of Poker and Advanced Theory of Poker are well worth reading

These books are highly spoken of in many places. Definitely good finds.

I started with Small Stakes Hold'em: Winning Big With Expert Play by David Sklansky, Ed Miller, and Mason Malmuth. For a good beginners book this works. It is all about playing against loose/amateur tables, where most people start.
