Do they play real poker in movies? Because I've watched some movies and the poker they play isn't the standard rules of poker, I noticed, or is it? For example, in the movie Maverick and in the movie Guns, Girls, and gambling. I want to learn the poker they play in movies, is it a traditional one or something?

They play a five card draw that NO ONE plays anymore, you can set up a game with your friends, but dont hold your breath on finding it at any casino. Also the movies allow super string bets (ill see your x and raise you my boat keys)

If you want to learn poker forget movies or TV, this site is unquestionably better for learning.

I used to shoot film & edit professionally for an outdoors TV show. The goal is to make the show exciting to viewers & on average you've over 8 hours of film to reduce to 26 minutes. Of course you're going to show all the exciting hands & not bother with the other 98% of hands played. Movies are scripted so why even bother when you know the hero will win or loose depending on the mood the writers want to set.

If you truly want to learn stick to CC forums & get in games with fellow CC'rs. Pay mind to each commenters post count too for obvious reasons. I've seen a lot of people become very successful players here & have learned untold volumes about the game myself.

I also noticed, that in one of the episodes of the film "Rounders", the main character played in "Chicago Poker". I did not hear about this kind of poker before this movie :).
Chicago Poker is a variation of the classic seven-card stud, but is of special importance trump is spades. At the end of the game, the total pot is split between the winner (the player who managed to assemble the strongest poker hand) and holder of the highest card of spades.
At pokerstars the game "Chicago Poker" is missing.

If i,m not wrong - they played 5 card draw poker in the "Maverick" movie . This is some kind of poker, where you can exchange all your cards(or just few) for another. If you like that, you can play 5 card draw on playmoney or real money. It is possible, i,m sure you can find this games somewhere in the rooms. Of course, most of the people prefer to play holdem or omaha, but if you wish you can play any game you want!

It saddens me that so many people consider 5 card draw a dead game. It used to be the only game in some areas, and it is a fantastic game. You can still find it online at some sites, like pokerstars. Although, it's rarely running for any decent stakes unless you're playing low-ball triple-draw.

It is included as part of several wsop events.

The one game that is probably most dead is 5 card stud, which is sad because I find it to be a perfect game for teaching the basic concepts and thought process of poker to people.

In movies there is a lot of fantasy within the game universe.

In the movie maverick the mode was a DRAW, different from the holdem that is most practiced.

To develop skills movies are not good, they are great tools for spreading poker, I think they still lack good titles to popularize.

In my country, there is a novel that speaks in a negative way of poker.

Friend I think you are looking for movies that you will actually learn in interesting sites like this. If in real you want to learn from poker you have to be in constant study of it and always remember that in this game there are your casualties and your alsas.
So enjoy the moment and concentrate to improve your game so that at some point in your life you see yourself as a movie player. 😎

Which movie about poker is closest to reality?

Believe it or not it's probably The Grand, which was a comedy movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427998/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

The entire final table was played for real, and improvised - so they didn't know who was going to win it.

Of course, it's actors playing and not real poker players, so the quality of the play is... erm... let's call it questionable :p

As for a movie that most closely represents the reality of the poker world, I'd say Lucky You: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338216/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Doyle Brunson consulted on that movie so most of the poker played is pretty realistic. It makes a point of showing what life is like away from the tables for the degenerates, grinders and pros that inhabit the poker world too.

Movies are movies.
Nothing in life happens as in the movies, everything there is more 'romantic'.
So there, when you see the actor get in his first a four or royal straight flush like something normal, it's because they wanna make things more dramatic.
When playing on life you see this hands almost never happen.

The poker style played in the movie Maverick, is (five card draw)
Nowadays it is difficult to find a casino in the world where (Draw) games are offered.
Most of the players prefer the style (Texas Hold'em) In my case I do not play any style other than Hold'em.

I usually close my eyes when they play poker in movies and tv shows (like in suits). every showdown has at least quads, as if this is the standard in every round.
