Is poker hype fading away?

Hi Guys, I'm not sure if it's just me or if it's really happening but I feel that the Poker hype, specially in brazil is much less than it was an year or 2 ago.

I see that there's much less propaganda, publicity and specially, PS, 888, party poker promotion and freeroll and bonuses have drastically dropped down.

What do you guys think?

ps. Hoping someone can show me another image and show me where the good entertainment is now.

I think the online poker platforms are finding that the advertising benefits are not paying for their costs. Plus, most players are finding that online poker is not quite like live poker.

Online poker in the USA hasn't or will be like it was. See a few states getting legit (for lack of a better word). Most live poker rooms are doing well from what I hear.

It certainly doesn't have that FOMO factor it once did.

puzzlefish makes a couple of good points.

The first being that there is a natural audience for poker, one that is drawn to it regardless of promotions, some of which are a waste of time, like the average sponsored poker 'ambassador' which I have argued for ages drive little business to sites.

The second point is also crucial - on-line poker often appears dubious and artificial...however, in no small part due to this dubiosity, live poker is thriving. Most major tours have been enjoying increasing attendance over the last few years (such as the EPT and wsop) so I think a need to hype poker is not warranted.

We are never going to see a 'Moneymaker Effect' again, but poker, particularly live poker is fairly robust.

The poker rooms have studied the players' market well and they have seen that they have a large number of participants but nevertheless in the market there have appeared many electronic games rooms, for which they have introduced in their offer casinos with a wide range of games where the profit they are tailor-made. All these calculations have led to the conclusion that the offers that were once no longer worthless and thus introduced the so-called "offers" that are almost zero for players, but apparently tempting for a new income.

i can speak of Europe. Online poker is same as two years before. but declined from 10 years before. With all the rakes increasing i wouldn´t wonder, really.

The hype is definitely down because the novelty has worn off. By that I mean, when Moneymaker hit it, there was a mad rush...a new way to hit it big. That still exists but the newness of it is gone. Now it's on TV everywhere with all kinds of leagues and tournaments. The players and people that enjoy it are still playing in one form or another. There are plenty of home games in my area. Online poker is down b/c of regulations, lack of competing rooms, inability to easily move money from room to room as in the old days. But the "hype" in the sense of the word is definitely down.

Definitely down, hard to see it coming back to the glory days. I like how one poster put it, the novelty has worn off.

Faded, but never gone. It will come back into the public's view again at some point. When it does, we'll all be ready for it!

I bet the asian market is experiencing a boom.
The chinese are the people with the money now, as the whole asia is gaining wealth. A fact worth noting.

The only thing I know is that most of my friends and their friends don't play as often as 3-4 years before. Personally, although I love the game, many times I prefer playing pubg or whatever on ps4 that brings me joy, rather than having r*ssians and br*zili*ns tilt me only by watching them play NoIdeaWhatIamDoingTexasNeverFoldThem. One love anyway!

They probably decided that they had already attracted everyone who wanted it and it does not make sense to continue this anymore, and they will remain ludomania

I don't think poker hype is fading at all yet. As more gambling places open around the world, there will be more poker rooms for now.

Nothing unusual just a business.

Hi - great post and very relevant with todays market, I think what we are seeing and have been seeing for the past 2 years is that the appeal of live poker has caught up more with Online poker, personally speaking - live poker is a million times more enjoyable than online and I think globally this view applies..
There still remains scepticism over online poker to a degree but that said, providers are trying to reinvent themselves to stay current, online sports betting and casino has become a massive driver for profit these days and a business has to have a multi faceted approach to profit making.

I also think that poker has had to become faster, massive fields, long tournaments are not as popular as they once were...

By its very definition "hype" always fades away to lower levels.

It is the very nature of hype.

But then something else comes along to promote the excitement again.

Maybe another Brazilian player that makes the final table in the WSOP Main Event?

But there are other possibilities.

It's not live poker.... it is online poker.... where you sit at a computer and play vs. other players. I think this is quite obvious to ALL players when they sign up to play... not just most (unless some think they'll be transported or 'beamed up' to a live table somewhere once they register to a game/table).

In my opinion, the peak of poker's hype was in the year 2010. It's been going up and down, ever since, but I honestly doubt it will ever die, Poker is a very old game, and thus, has withstand the test of time.

I really hope that the poker market has already reached its bottom and will now grow thanks to Asian countries, where the growth potential is very large !!!

Before black friday poker had some image of game where people could easily become rich. All those high stakes games like "poker after dark" and tournaments live on TV contributed to this. After black friday the dark side of the poker also became visible and people realized that their money are not safe in unregulated market like online poker. Every time when new big market like Russia or Brazil is opened to poker there is some spike of interest till people realize that game is not so easy and definitely not everybody become rich from it. Currently poker in general is stable and well regulated and will continue to grow slowly as market but the explosive expansion from the first online days will not repeat unless some new great innovation (like VR for example) transforms again the game.

In Ukraine, the advertisement of pokerstars and other large poker rooms was big 5 years ago, maybe more. There were even poker related programs. In all likelihood, advertising does not pay for itself as it should. And secondly, now more than a TV replaces YouTube since the computer and the Internet are everywhere now.

Is it even important whether the hype around Poker is declining or not? For us ordinary players it doesn't make a difference in the world, imo.

the hype is definitely falling + various legislative restrictions in different countries, the Moneymaker effect, unfortunately, is unlikely to happen again
