You need both to be succesful but if you have skill you will be at some point succesful, you just need to be patient

as they say, not everybody is given to know :) if you will just wait and hope that you become a professional, you are hoping in vain!

Poker is a game of skill, it is indisputable , however some of the time the deck helps the opponent , and there is nothing else that can be done , but in general , poker is a game of skill rather

Poker is a game of luck, bad luck is the guy sitting at the table who know how to play!

Obviously there are elements of luck/chance in poker. But it is a game of skill.

Game of luck? I'd rather call it a game of opportunities and chances.

It`s very old and hackneyed question) I think, all profitable players can say, that poker is game of skill. And vice versa, players, who lose their money almost certainly will say to you, that poker is game just of luck.

Hi Everyone,
This is my first thread, I want to join this forum because I want to share my experiences, about poker or gambling. Ok, let me start regarding the title. Poker game that was considered as game of skill is no longer true. Why I can say this? just think about a match of two football teams. They are in the same skill, same level, and so what is the factor that determine the winner? LUCK, yes, luck, either by penalty, or wait until one of the teams got tired and have little focus. This example also valid to poker, when all the players on the table know how to read tells, betting pattern, playing position, know value of cards, then what is the point of having those skills, while others also knew it, it becomes what so called "common knowledge" in game theory. Nowadays, we can see lots of information bout poker everywhere, especially youtube. Books aren't that exclusive anymore, everybody can get "free" information. So nowadays poker almost can be called "gamble". You play poker and you can say that you "gamble". It is like blackjack when you cannot count cards anymore. I agree that there are still lots of fishes out there when you can suck out. But still, you "gamble" to find a fish, if there is any. so, now poker is just a game of luck and chance, you wait until you got the best cards, best flop, best turn, and best river. That is why poker legends are slowly being replaced by young poker players, they cant dominate this poker world anymore.

SIR I totally disagree with a lot of what you say. There are NO 2 football teams that have the same exact skill level. Every single player is different & also every single coach is different.

You say you "gamble" to find a fish anymore, if there is any left. I dare you to go to a $3/6 Limit Hold'em game and tell me that the game is NOT at least half full of fishes.

Just because a person may know poker knowledge surely doesn't mean they are on the same skill level whatsoever. Just because we may read the same books or watch the same vids, does NOT make us equal. There will ALWAYS be somebody that is better in at least 1 thing than you are & that is called SKILL not luck.

You do NOT have to wait until you have the best cards, I have seen a plethora or cornucopia,if you will, of people that have bad hands and just outplay the person with the better hand.

You also say that you cannot count cards anymore in blackjack. There are a vast majority of casinos that have 1 deck tables that hand deal blackjack & U can count cards there very effectively.

You say poker legends are being replaced by younger players, but if U say that poker is a game of luck & not skill then nobody will be replacing nobody, because skill won't matter & it just matters on how lucky you are that day.

I feel where you are coming from, but in the long run poker is always a game of skill, a good poker player will always be a winning player in the long run.

I agree with you with this one PFS, that's why most people use HUDs and other add-ons like leak buster to minimize luck based decisions and stick with the data.

I think it depends the site. For instance, there is a poker site that if you have ak, qq, kq, kk, aa they are lost hands. Kind of screws up the poker play totally.

In tournaments with good deep structure and cash - this is a skill game. In turbos, hypers and when rake is big - this is more a luck.

I agree with you , in cash and real money tournaments are used more skill than luck , since the turbo , hyper, and most used fortunate because chances you have may be unique , otherwise the very structure of the tournament eliminates you, or you are always short stack , there with his 7 / 10bb

I don't understand the sometimes answer or why it's even there. It's a black or white question. Either you are using skills to make plays, or it's random luck.

Someone who answered sometimes, please explain.

Its both. you have to play your opponents so thats skill but it is also a card game which makes it luck. You can read what people might have but you cant predict what the community cards will be

Luck is 80% in tournaments, just look the final table are always completely different, skillfull players cant make till the end every time. Or look moneymaker, he made the wsop because he was lucky until the end

Luck is always the great equalizer and it is very important in the game of poker. Many pros will tell you that every player has the exact same amount of good luck and bad luck over the course of the longterm { 12 months or more}

This is a lie !

Some people in life, are naturally more lucky then others and this is a fact, whether its in slot machines, cards , lottery ticket, or life in general. For anyone to claim that every person on earth is blessed with the exact same amount of good luck and bad luck as each other, is absurd. The universe and our existence does not work like that.

In fact, I will make this statement ;

I would much rather be a average or below average poker player, that has consistent great luck, then be a above average poker player that has consistent bad luck.

Also, you will often see that the bad player with great luck, will beat the good player with bad luck.

I play with a sociopath who is in every damn pot preflop { the blind is $5 and he will NEVER fold his hand preflop for $5...he always calls to see a flop} and this guy is a big winner in the game. He is the lossest player I have ever seen and he has been beating the game for years . If I played every hand , the way he does, I would go broke or be a losing player. I only play about 5% of hands preflop...this sociopath plays 90-100% of the hands preflop.

A person that has consistent good luck, has the ability to play a poorer poker game and be a winner, then a person who only has average luck or below average luck on a regular basis.

I believe that success or failure is only one component of poker, as well as mathematics or psychology. , Confirming the presence of many professionals, for whom poker has become the main source of profit.

It is a game of skill like most games of this type requires a percentage of luck. If you leave some comparisons here : Basketball , soccer , football , etc.

If 80 % luck , it would be quite logical to go allin at least 80 % of laa hands regardless of the cards . You do it?
Not so high percentage of luck
