luck plays a role. Let me put it in investment terms, in the 1970's and 1980's you could buy Coke shares at reasonable valuations, same for nestle or colgate. Todays markets especially in india have these shares at 40-50 times earnings. The current generation is paying a higher price for quality shares. Much higher price, i believe this generation is less lucky than those who came before them. Same holds true for poker.

Luck in the short term.
Skill in the long term.
Simple as that.

There is some merit to what you say, but the comparison is laughable. Look at the NFL and you can clearly see who the great teams are, who the good teams are and who the bad teams are. Plus, poker is an individual sport, so a more apt comparison can be made to a MLB player. Are the best hitters just lucky? They guess right on more pitches than the other guys around them? No, they study the game, they study what the pitcher is doing and try to out think what the pitcher is going to throw so they have a better chance to get a hit. Plus, there are more players on more skill levels. This is more like poker, you have a lot of players at varying skill levels, and no one is going to be successful everytime but if you are a student of the game, you put yourself in a better position to be successful. There are a lot of "donks" out there, there are also a lot of really talented players. But the one true thing that divides the good from the bad is how you play hands that aren't made. Everyone can play made hands, whether they be monsters, flopped top pair, 4 to a flush, ect. What separates the truly talented is how they play hands on disconnected and disjointed boards.
Most people think of pinball as a luck game, but I argued a case where a guy had a pinball machine in his house, he had it rigged to dispense a jackpot if you scored a certain level of points, there were a lot of players (he lived in a frat house). A lot of people played that game and it was difficult to reach the point level because the ball can take a bad bounce or come off of a bumper at a bad angle or any number of other things that people would call bad luck. But there were a handful of people (including my client) that could hit the point total regularly because of their skill level. This is just like poker and when/if there is ever some decent legislation (like that bill in NY) that gets online poker legalized again, I will use the same arguments to try and secure poker rights for all of us.
There are a lot more good players than there used to be, and the information age has evened the divide between the pros and amateurs, but the game has also changed as well and there are so many different levels and types of players that make the game challenging, fun and (for those who are good enough) profitable.

in long term is skill, the game involved numbers stadistics, variance.. ups highs.. focus but we need to find the way... keep focus ever to reduce the variance that is inevitable... but always look the poker just to long term..

Hi Everyone,
This is my first thread, I want to join this forum because I want to share my experiences, about poker or gambling. Ok, let me start regarding the title. Poker game that was considered as game of skill is no longer true. Why I can say this? just think about a match of two football teams. They are in the same skill, same level, and so what is the factor that determine the winner? LUCK, yes, luck, either by penalty, or wait until one of the teams got tired and have little focus. This example also valid to poker, when all the players on the table know how to read tells, betting pattern, playing position, know value of cards, then what is the point of having those skills, while others also knew it, it becomes what so called "common knowledge" in game theory. Nowadays, we can see lots of information bout poker everywhere, especially youtube. Books aren't that exclusive anymore, everybody can get "free" information. So nowadays poker almost can be called "gamble". You play poker and you can say that you "gamble". It is like blackjack when you cannot count cards anymore. I agree that there are still lots of fishes out there when you can suck out. But still, you "gamble" to find a fish, if there is any. so, now poker is just a game of luck and chance, you wait until you got the best cards, best flop, best turn, and best river. That is why poker legends are slowly being replaced by young poker players, they cant dominate this poker world anymore.

I think this is far from the truth. I know the games are tougher now than in the poker boom because there are more good, knowledgable players but I would have to say if you're good and adapt to your situations this will include finding an edge on any villian. Even it's a marginal, in the long run you're going to beat that villian.

Hmm i think you talking some good thing here, nah seriously i think both are hard , both need several skills sets, live you need the ability to read people and stamina to last for hours and you got to do fitness also you have to have a good memory, online you dont have to have the best memory there are software out there to help you, also you can play when you want so not need to be fit a lot, anyway good luck mate have fun!

if you can look for fishes to play its already not gambling. If you are also a shark a little bit bigger than other one, it is still not gamble. I believe you need to count on lucky more than other sports, but it is still a sport for me.

If someone believes poker is all luck, I welcome them to play me heads up for as much money as they want. We're just basically flipping a coin to see who wins right, so why not?

It is pretty hard to win in a poker game compared to others. I guess some people have a strategy but sometimes it don't really work. Its just a matter how you play the games and lastly you need to enjoy it. At the end of the day whether we win or lose will still play it.
