Have you heard that International Federation Of Poker failed in an attempt to become a member of SportAccord, an organization which is the chief curator of the Olympic and non-Olympic sports.
A chance to give poker the status of a sports game is greatly reduced.
Now what do you say?

The organization has made a major bet on the "Match poker" - team game which not made a positive effect on functionaries, and it was declined.

Poker has been officially accepted by the IMSA (International Mind Sports Association). It is considered a mind sport just like chess or bridge.

I now that poker is categorized as a card game, but i dont know if that should make it qualify as a sport. I would have loved to see it become a sport, but I am more than happy to keep playing poker just the way i always do.

Poker isn't a sport. But it does take a lot of skill to play it well

It seems to me that poker has a partial relation to sports, rather it is an independent industry, it is a separate category, more related to entertainment. Sport is all the same physical development, poker is more adrenaline and analysis of the situation)

I believe that poker is more a gamble than a sport. And what sports can be found in the card game? I'm certainly very fond of poker, but I do not consider sports.

Sport bridge is one of a kind card game, which was recognized as an official sport. Bridge – the only card game that is an Olympic sport. In its complexity, excitement and popularity of the bridge is on a par with a game like chess. The first international Olympic Bridge tournament was held in Beijing in 2008 in the framework of the World mind Games.
With regard to sport poker in Russia. Russia recognized poker sport in 2007 (Texas hold'em, Omaha and seven card stud poker). Sports poker is excluded from the register of sports in Russia in 2009 - this decision was taken as part of a campaign against illegal casinos.

Obviously poker failed to be recognized as a sport because it simply isn't one. As far as mind sports are concerned that is just a made up term, that became popular in the late 90's because games like chess and bridge wanted to be considered sports and they wanted to differentiate them from other popular board games. I don't understand this fascination with the need for games to be considered sport. Poker is game, I like playing game.

Never mind that it (rightly) wasn't classified as a sport, I think this is the first I've heard that there's an International Federation of Poker! :p

I think poker is a game not a sport.

The great percentage of influence that has the luck factor is what makes it not considered a sport. There are many things that can not be handled and are randomly delivered.

I think poker is referred as a mind sport, like chess, and not a physical sport.

Ultimately this comes from a bigger debate about whether poker is, or is not, gambling.

You're right. But the difference is that in poker the money(or chips) are present directly on the table, and this is a gambling.
This difference is does not join in the sport(yet).

I think major tournaments could be an exception.
Even though play can go for days its still not physically strenuous.

I guess there's two main reasons:

- First, chess isn't really considered a sport either. At best it's considered a "mind sport"

- Second, chess is usually played purely as a game, whereas poker will always have the gambling association too.

That second one is a huge problem if being recognised as any kind of "sport" is what you're aiming for. Just look at the lengths the Olympics go to in distancing themselves from any association with gambling of any kind.

ok i wouldnt call poker a sport also, but it could be set as "mind game" not gambling game
