After flopping middle set last week and simply not believing villians river bet although I was only really beating a bluff after i thought about I decided to play chess. A game which i have much more control, chess. It was a good time for to take a break because i was just spewing money. I have not played chess in almost 5 years as most of my friends aren't really into chess.
Some of the things I learned from playing chess that I can relate to poker.
Look at all the angles. On the chess board, it was trying to figure out what my opponent was up to. On the poker table the same thing applies. What hands would be flat pre? check call flop and turn, pretty harmless river now he's trying to get it all the money in the pot? Is my top pair any good? He could be spewing with JJ or worse? Does he have a set? What's going on here. More often than not I think my hand is dead and I'm usually right.
On the chessboard there is the sacrifice which is usually, rook takes bishop, knight or pawn or bishop takes pawn. To me this is checking the turn the A hits completing your hand in position. You're afraid of the A. Giving up some value for hopefully better returns on the river. Rooks in chess are strong pieces however the goal is mate the king. In poker 3 streets of value but I want his whole stack. Now villian thinks I'm scared of the A and is going to get tricky on me. Villan checks the river, I bet, he 3bets(and the heavens open up finally) I'm all in, no problem. Stack has been mated to speak. Villian is left crippled. Need to find new target.
Oddly enough position is key in chess so that you can launch an attack. The button always has the best chances to attack if he chooses.
Finally, the thing I learned is that I have to play my game, my style, the way I want to play. Just like in poker, i know the guy on my right is a maniac, does that mean I have to be a maniac too? Nope, just have to wait on the poker gods to grace me with KK over his QJ suited.
Does anybody else see any similarities to poker and chess? what are you thoughts? oh yeah, I did bink the freeroll on carbon last night although last hand was a super suckout. ATs vs AQo. Flopped a flush. See ya on the felt
