Hi,

Could anyone recommend a book on the 'maths' of poker? I have several great strategy books, but am missing a really comprehensive book on the maths side of NLHE. Whilst I have an okay understanding, a really solid mathematical knowledge base is the next aspect of my game that I want to work on.

I know its all find-able on the net, but I'd like a solid, comprehensive book that has everything in one place and is detailed.

Cheers,

Isaac

There are a number of poker books that cover the math quite well.

Of course the seminal work is Bill Chen's "Mathematics of Poker" but it reads like a graduate level MIT textbook. Not something the average player could easily digest or apply, but if you want one authoritative reference...

Of more practical use to most people are books aimed at us mere mortals. Owen Gaines' "Poker Math that Matters" is an excellent little book especially for those new to the math side of poker. "Professional No-Limit Holdem" and its sequel "Small Stakes No-Limit Holdem" by Miller/Flynn/Mehta do a great job at explaining the math, including an excellent coverage of SPR. Primarily cash games books though. While a lot of the math considerations are the same between cash and tourney play, each discipline requires different strategy and emphasis. For instance cash will typically rely heavily on SPR considerations, while MTT/SNG can use SPR but really relies more on ICM which doesn't exist in cash at all.

thanks for the recommendations! Yeah it makes sense to start with something like the Gaines before embarking on the Chen..

BTW I should mention that poker books are so last decade... :)

For what you'd pay for a couple of half-way decent poker books -- that may or may not be entirely relevant in terms of modern poker strategy -- you could pay for like 3 months at a training site like DragTheBar where you'd have access to a wide array of coaching videos covering all aspects of poker, including math, while also allowing you to ask questions directly of the coaches themselves. Many people grasp concepts a lot faster from a visual presentation like a video than they do from reading a book. That said, some of the aforementioned book authors (like Owen Gaines, a coach at DTB who also produces videos there), will also take questions on anything in their books.

If it sounds like I'm shilling for DTB, yeah I kinda am, but there are a number of other popular training sites as well -- Deuces Cracked, CardRunners, BlueFire, LeggoPoker (recently purchased by Phil Ivey), etc.

I concur.

Spent a few months on DTB & was very pleased with it.
