This is the follow on from the article this guy was torn to pieces about a while back.

I agree with loads of what he says, the biggest being that poker player have such big egos they downplay the amount of luck in poker.

Lots of the comments make good reading at the end of the article, but u got to read the article first.

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/t...cards-right-is-poker-a-game-of-skill-or-luck/

My own point about luck in poker, I find very hard to explain. I KNOW poker is a game of skill & luck. It is my opinion that it is when u get lucky that will really count.

Simple example.

If I was on the final table bubble in the wsop, hit my set of aces on a rainbow board with no straight possibilities on flop. I push all in. I get called by another guy who has hit a smaller set. Then, on the river he hits his quads.

Then, home game, $500 winner takes all with 10 friends. EXACT same scenario as above, other than I win, set over set.

Lucky has then made a massive difference and had a massive bearing on the game of poker.

Statistic say that if u play enough hands and you are a great player, u will win over time.

Statistically, the Worlds best player COULD lose every coin flip

The solution to this age old question is so obvious, no one can see it except me (prolly because my eyes each focus differently).

Poker is 80% Skill, and 80% luck !

Solved........ldo

I do a lot of competition fishing, where the luck element is much less than unknowledgable people would suppose. In other words the more you fish the more you realise that those who consistently win are excercising an amount of skill you didn't used to realise was possible.

I believe it's the same with poker. The more you play the more you realise it's possible to get better and win more by skill and not just by relying on luck. But it's never going to be possible to demonstrate that during one game of heads-up.

The other thing I have found in fishing is that the majority get old myths stuck in their head and never dare question them, while the winners find different ways of winning - by thinking 'outside the box.' And by always keeping it simple. I'm certain this is the same in poker, for I see so many hands over-analysed as if two robots were playing instead of two fallible people.

I play in a couple of live poker leagues and luck plays a massive part in these. But over the 12 week season it's the same 3 or 4 players that are at the top. Is this just that they are more lucky or are they better players in the long run. I believe it is the latter.

As someone who barely ever fishes, this made alot of sense =] very well put analogy.

luck only lasts so long! i will take skill over luck any day, and all day!!

I'll take luck over skill all the time. Skill is inevitable, it happens with familiarity, you can hardly avoid developing skill over time. Meanwhile luck is killing your skill.

One of the skills you must learn in poker is how to manipulate things to get lucky. All the other skills are math based.

if several days, luck is the king!
if long term, skill is the king!

so how long is called long, 3 times of sigma...err 3 times of standard derivation....I think....LOL

bad beats happens because WSOP happens once every year...if final table happens 10times a day, then, no luck, simply skill works....LOL

Skill is the ability to get all your opponents chips in the pot when they are behind... it's pure luck if your hand holds up.

Well this is only the case for recreational players. It wouldn't affect a poker pro because they would just enter the next high buy in tournament and eventually their luck will balance. They don't just go for a $10,000 buy in tourney then go and play $500 home games for the rest of the year.
