Poker as earning a living, how do you figure out whether this is normal?

I think if you love poker then you can easily start your career.

I would say that where I live the average salary of $ 100 per month , then win in freerolls money then this is a good supplement to the salary, playing on your own money you need a lot of learning to get a stable income

heavely depends on were you live + tax laws.
a lot of countriess have a median salry of 300-400 $ this is more than achievable at micros, going a bit further lets say you play 4tables nl50 zoom and have 2bb/100 (a pretty mediocre result a more realistic would be 4bb/100) and in put 180hr a month (6/day or 22 8hr work days as in regular job) you have ~180k hands month this can = to 1800$ month + rake... lets say 200$ (will depend on the pots you are involved + star level you have i'm just thwoing a minimum) so you make ~2K/month.
I do understand that this "math" will vary on player/month/network... but as a rough estimate it it correct.
Now is 2k a month something you can live on? Again for a lot of countries this is good money, but in for exmp. canada.... not so much.
Plus 1 the exmaple I gave is just working schedule, this not close to grinding you could do while growing up the limits.
Plus 2 you have to be honest with yourself. If you are not plaing playing 1k HUSNG,200/400 NLHEM you can make in a side hustle for a few hundreds and be happy with that.

If you mean normal normal as in "socially acceptable"... would you really care if you could afford to buy youself a decent car in less than a month work? =)

its just rediculous to say something like that and expect a specific answer,
you need to put some serious work on your game and have the mentality to face the big downsings when they come.
also you will need a very big sample of hands to see if you are a winning player, thats about 100K hands in your current limit,
in my opinion you can try to play lets say "semi-professional" for a year thats playing about 100K hands a month, and if you make good money then you can consider turning a pro.
should play NL50 and above before considering anything, sure there are pros at lower stakes but you have to put so much volume that is just rediculus to make some decent money without melting your brain lol.

okey bro, you can make 50$... I assure you, maybe a bit more =)))))

point 1. If you say 50$ as min wage I would think you live in 1 of the slavic non EU countries(russia, belarus, kazakhstan, ukraine) or east (thailand,vietnam...) You can make a living out ther at "micros" and be popping at "lows" wether its cash or sng.
point 2. If you want a carrier in poker you have to be specific at what exactly is it that you envision. Innerpsy (look up at twich) is a pro. I would estimate he makes ~25k$ a month(+rakeback...+PS contract). Fedor holz is also a pro, he made ~16mil in 2016. I hope you see what I'm trying to say

nope. As I said before if your min wage is ~100-200$ it's really not that hard to make double-triple tha amount. You dont have to play nosebleeds nor some crazy BRM required. most contries (if tax is not killing you) you could be making a living at nl25. Again, the example I gave about nl50 is somthing you can do and is something that might make you enought to do something else. So we are on the same page here, I not telling you to quit your job, altight? =) There are easier(depends on your character) ways to make that money, but there are sure as hell much harder, than sitting in you underpans drinking tea and chewing cookies while you try your best not to shove K2o from MP

I don't even understand this thread. Just like anything in life only about the top 10% of the people that are good enough make a living off a sport or recreational game. If you're in the top 10 then go for it! Playing a game for a living is better than playing real life grown-up job with bosses any day.

If you not lazy one & not full dummy one - you can grab in online poker up to $1k/month easy.
Just good selecting tables, conservative bankroll management & learn/study all the time - that must be the rule of your way.
More watching the play of top-players game - is good one too : that not cost for you nothing, but can give you lot of trick`s & move`s for your future game.
I`m sure - only lazy dummies always cry : "..omg ! Again & again - I can`t beat the game ! .. wtf !?" & so on..
But only hard work (step by step) and some of time - can give you all what you want. Not right now, not after few seconds - but after your work !

I do not think that it is good to make a living in poker.

Can you good luck in the beginning, but once you are infected with the virus, exit pretty hard of this.

I believe that the yoke of poker should not be taken as a way to earn big money. Most of all - it is a way of fun and pleasure. Well, if you really are a plus "holiday", and claim to follow - so it's just great. And in general, I believe that the more "hung" to win, the less likely that you will get it, that is. For Once in my head "to" fear, fear, etc. And then - the game of poker is not converted into a nice holiday.

I think not enough just to love poker to earn !!! it is necessary to have a talent for poker !!! and if there is no talent is hard work !!! but if you set a goal to earn in poker and are working on it instead of just playing it real !!!

Some people think that poker is easy money, I assure you it is not so. Very much it is necessary to constantly study, read books on poker, watch videos on poker, analyze the hands. Then maybe you will earn poker money.

if I may say my experience about playing online poker I started playing poker 10 months ago I play only free roll tournaments, rarely play a tournament where I had to pay for participation,In the beginning I played carefully I was pleased with the fact that I earn a cent or dollar:)then I started to get a bigger reward and then I played some tournaments on poker stars where participation was $ 3 bounty builder only once managed to get a larger sum of money,I lost a lot of money for me is a lot $ 30 or $ 50 :)I want to say that the more I play the tournaments it's worse for me:)must be a lot of patience, knowledge and sometimes luck:):D I would not be able to live from playing poker

We do not earn from poker, but I hope that one day it will be feasible because it notes that every day I grow as a player.

Good luck. If you treat it like a business and have good money management, then you are 75% there already.

If it was so easy! To make a living playing poker - is incredibly difficult. Years of training and no guarantee of success.
