Sometimes people get a bad idea of poker players, like quenson people who waste their time in games or just do not know how badly to spend their money but have really been thinking about whether poker is a sport? For me the answer is a sport where you can have talent or train to be a better player. This is about having a strong mind and a body that can withstand, it is not easy to last several hours in a poker tournament and decipher how to beat one or several opponents you need to be prepared and have a good condition, so for me the poker is a sport because although it is a game of chance to be the best you must play well, it is not only a matter of luck.

For me, it's not even close. A sport has to involve some element of physical activity beyond picking up cards or moving a mouse. Poker, like chess, is a mental activity, not a physical activity.

Taken to the extreme, a quadriplegic can play poker, and play it well with the appropriate physical aids.

I would consider it a sport because of the physical stamina it takes to be a professional poker player

While a player can be a good sport on the felts, or sport some really cool CardsChat swag while playing; for poker to actually be a sport, it would require physical exertion at all levels of play. Since that isn't the case, poker is a competitive game of skill, not a sport.

Sport, shmort it doesn't matter what you call it, you call it a sport I won't argue even though there is no physical activity, but mental exertion and talent to excel. You can make the argument it's on the same line as chess, where as chess you think ahead of yours and your opponents moves - long term tactical, and in poker you have to be a mind reader, equation solver and have great stamina to compete consistently, multiple short term tactical strategies employed.

Poker in a name, category, is good enough for me, there ain't nothing like it, some days I like it, love it or can leave it behind. :wavey:

People call it a sport to detract from the fact that it is gambling! A sport- yeah right- is playing the card game war a sport? that takes stamina- I would argue , NO

I don't consider poker a sport. No useful physical exercise for health. Some back strain during the game.

I think it's pretty clearly not a sport, but I think there's a much more interesting question related to it: why should we CARE whether people think it's a sport or not? Why does it even matter?

Because poker wanted to equate to one of the sports. Like chess. But they have received only a refusal.

In many countries tournament poker is recognized as a sport! That's a fact, it's not my opinion.

Sport definition - activity requiring skill or physical prowess!
I was sceptical of your definition so I looked up the definition of sport on dictionary.com and this is what I found:an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.

There was another thread about weather Poker is a sport or not and I made a detailed post about why is not and how “mind sport” is a made up term but in short poker is not a sport it’s a game and that doesn’t make it less than or better than any other activity.

But my question is, why does that matter?

What would we, as poker players, gain if poker was somehow recognised as a "sport"?

Would people suddenly stop thinking poker was gambling? Not likely. Would it change poker's legal status in some countries where it's banned? Again, not likely because it would still be gambling. Would it bring an influx of new players to the game? I mean... maybe, but it doesn't seem likely.

It will not change anything! It just does not matter. Fishing is recognized as a sport, are fishermen athletes? lol

my opinion is that sport should develop a person's physical parameters!!! if chess is a sport, why can not poker be a sport? I think that both chess and poker are the activities of your brain, and calling it sport is stupid. if people began to call the players in the DotA 2 athletes. then poker is also a sport. it seems to me that people in the world generally forgot what sport really is. DOUBLE STANDARDS :)

Clever use of physical skills to bring to life. Sport is not a twitch on the woman and think like in chess. Poker is not chess. in sport develop physically

Do not get me wrong. I enjoy playing poker. Every so often I like to get together with some of my friends and play a little cards. We enjoy some snacks, exchange walking-around money and have some laughs.

Not a sport. Baseball, football, basketball and hockey are sports.
