Poker is a Game You Play Against Yourself

Took me a very long time to realize this. Poker is more like golf, or bowling than it is like chess or backgammon. Sure you play with others but the battle is all within yourself.

Pick your spots and don't do anything stupid!

I don't see any resemblance of poker to bowling or golf. Nothing in common!

And I agree, the other players are not the ones we should worry so much about.

Poker is a strategy and luck game.I m not sure what you mean game within yourself?because of tilting,your strategy of game or the concentration while youre playing.

Elvis, I think you are touching on it some.. sticking to your strategy, not getting taken off your A-game, etc.. or like I said, Don't do anything stupid.

I agree to what you are saying. You do have to stay focused and in control at the poker table.

took me very short time to realise you are smoking to much wood , every modality you mention requires a tremendous amount of discipline to succeed , also you can do a lot of stupid shit in every one of them

I believe that poker is a game that you have that enters the head of your opponent with a good strategy so for me it is not a game that you play against yourself.

That's only true when you are playing against people who arent as good as you.Discipline will only get you so far in poker, as you climb in limits you will need creativity and understanding of others.

it is true with me I make my own stupid mistakes . but far different than golf or bowling there's a huge element you don't so much have in golf and bowling. In poker you have the weird guy going all in with 7 2 and you have aces in the hole you lose to sevens and twos not quite as much luck in other sports. your playing yourself when golfing I golf so I can say luck rarely won me a match it was more skill to win or,lack of skill to lose.

In bowling you choose the ball by its weight and produce the desired throw. In poker you play those that you gave in hands. Huge difference.

I think it's more like chess or backgammon. If we leave apart the luck factor, it has to do a lot with thought and strategy.Your next move may give you an advantage or be a disaster, even if your opponent has done nothing yet

Referencing playing against yourself, the game takes patience and is played over the long run. Not making daft calls and learning/ studying the game requires focus.

The game is definitely played against other people though... You can’t just concentrate on your own game, you need to read what your opponents are doing and adjust your play.

Poker is a combination of luck skill strategy and practice.Each action needs a different way of approach.Every day you can learn something more.But yes sometimes you have to win yourself and do the right thing.

Poker is more or less exactly like a cards game, yes, yes... Oh wait... IT IS a cards game!
Anyway, i believe he who opened the topic, didn't actually make a comparison, but rather an analogy. And a good one for that matter...
You do play against yourself many times in poker, when your brain and every bone tells you to fold... then comes "a red horned little guy on your shoulder" telling you "shove... go, go, go", and against your better judgement, you keep making the same mistake over and over again. Funny it has to take us so long to actually learn when to follow our instincts.
