Found myself playing a live cash game recently with 3 players really drunk and a new player who secretly confessed he'd never played before and was only playing because he won £1,200 at roulette. At this point I was £170 up and was really tired and decided I was going to leave even though there was roughly around £1,000 in front of these 4 players.

Player to my left is a regular when I told himI was leaving as I was tired(4am) he said he was also tired but these oppertunnities don't come along very often and was going to play through.

Question is should I have played through the tiredness(i was starting to nod off) or should I have bought a couple of energy drinks and ground it out?

If you bought the old, " I've never played before but I just won a bundle at roulette & I'm feeling lucky", you were unquestionably too tired to play :), good walkaway.

My question is what live game were you playing where they each only have $250 avg a piece and games like that don't run often. World's toughest 1/2 room? I'm just assuming 1/2 from the dollar amounts, but if you're at a 1/2 table and more than like 2-3 other people at the table have a clue you're doing it wrong.

Good walk if you dont feel like playing don't. As far as these opportunities don't come along often, they happen every week.

My dad always reminded me to be very, VERY weary of players that are self-deprecating. Very similar to TJ Cloutier's advice of 'beware of the speech'

Bascially, rack the chips and run like your tushie is on fire !!!!!!

I don't know about live, but when Im playing online I don't see much of a difference from when Im drunk or when Im tired. Neither way is a good way to make some money at the poker table.

I agree with Kenzie though, I doubt he was really a beginner, but I wouldn't have even thought about it if he didnt say it, so what do I know.

Where does he talk about all these people who have a clue? He only says there's one reg.

i think it doesn't matter if you're tired or drunk...it's pretty much the same thing..if you can't play your best game for any reason(cause you're tired, sick, drunk ,sad or whatever) you should just walk..IMO..and one last thing...
never fall for that kinda stuff.... " i won X $ on roulette so i decided to play some poker... but i never played b4"

I find that when I get bored/tired when playing live, I usually end up leaving broke. For the year I am up $84 playing live and frankly I don't see myself going back for a while. It really just bores me playing 1 table of NLHE. I can't wait until November when the WPT is at Fallsview and the PLO games are running :)

When playing live I tend to do pretty well if I'm a little drunk... gives me the courage to fire out position bluffs when I might hesitate a little too much and make it seem too obvious when I'm sober.

there were actually 3 reg's 4 drunks and mr roulette, who I actually believed due to the various things he was doing. I'm a semi reg and have been told by a friend who deals there that I am consider very tight and alot of the reg's prefer to aviod me. Also regarding the amouts it's minimum buy-in of £50, I bought in for £65, this is so that we don't scare away the fish with large buy-in amounts.

This guy knows best. Unless you were playing extremely micro / low stakes, leave.

not sure

I cannot figure out which is better. I often play at lengths, and also addmitedly often play drunk. I think at times I play my best poker drunk. My money is not scared, but I still seem to make rational decisions. When I am tired i seem to play super tight, so I can get a few seconds of rest....I think neither is the optimal way to play, thus promising for the three millionth time of my life to give up drinking and sleep more....Im on a ten year plan.

I don't see the question as which is better, playing tired or playing drunk... I see "is it okay to play tired versus a bunch of drunks.?"

I would say play on for a while. As soon as your being tired costs you, call it. As long as you are having success, get a Red Bull an carry on. You need it to not nod off driving home anyway.

As a side note, this reminds me of my golf dilemma... I drive best when relaxed after a couple beers, but I can't putt well unless sober. It's a cruel world.
