Playing poker is business?

Could playing poker be seen as a way to generate income to live comfortably? Could you spend the rest of your life playing poker and never worry about having a job again?

I know a lot of experience is needed. But don't think you can make a living from poker.

business is not given to everyone
you must have or develop the necessary qualities in yourself

If you can live from poker, it depends on the country you are in, and if you are single or head of the family, many variables influence. For example in some country that you can live with $ 500, you can easily produce it in Nl 5 or Nl 10

Good night, mate. I agree in parts with you, making a living with poker happens to one out of every 100,000, however, there is a possibility, if the guy is experienced and focuses on just learning about the game, he sure will be successful and maybe have a comfortable life with the game.

Hmm, I have never considered poker from this point of view, and this is interesting, I think that poker can be considered a business, especially if you do it professionally, that is, if only this is what you do for a living.
Strategy, tactics, investment, training, working time, all the components of the business are present, so poker is a business, poker for large bets )).

Poker may be the main way to generate income, but unfortunately the number of pro players is limited. This is how the poker industry works, everyone won’t win. For me, the main question is whether I can play every day with maximum concentration or will poker become an ordinary routine and this will affect the final result. So far, the second option is more common with me, but I'm working on myself and everything may change.

Risk=/= Good business, more risk more problems always. Poker+business=Stop playing just build casino, simple and then thats good

Business is for those who own, for example, a poker room or website.
For me personally, this is a hobby where you can earn a little money.

Without a doubt, poker can be profitable. But if you want to live in abundance, in your own apartment, then all the same, you have to work hard. Poker is the same job as a driver, doctor, builder, or engineer.

Generally I would say yes. Now let's be realistic, you could play at a very high level, completely understand GTO, never make a mistake, and you still have a 30% of being a losing player.

If thats the case Coaching is really where the money, and living is made. Not actually playing.

The reason I say "Generally, Yes." Is cause you can't be a respectable coach without the success at the table to back it up.

easily and not easily. I did it for 5 or 6 years only playing poker no other income. I made a modest income but I also had a nice bankroll. It is a very very very hard grind and I burnt out about 2 years ago. There were times I played 20 or 30 days in a row and traveled all over the state of Florida. You really need 6 months of expenses money(non poker expenses) and a bankroll to survive. You may never have to dip into that 6 months but you need to have it in reserve. I'm now back to playing live again and in a room within 15 minutes of my house. I'm taking it easy doing okay and probably wont travel to the big tournaments more than 1 or 2 times a year. So yes it is possible but it truly is like any other job and thats how you have to look at it. Now I'm off to work see ya.

for me it's diverging yet I'm not on the level of making good money

Yes, you can make a living off of poker. If you're smart, you'll use your profits to invest them for multiple sources of income.

If you earn enough money to be able to live on poker, it can be a business, I look at it as fun.

Fact is that some players have achieved it so it is definitely possible. Another fact is that there is much higher risk than in normal job and very few percent of all players have achieved it.

For any business other than brains, you need seed capital. But poker is a special business and not everyone is given it.

I think poker is a great way to save some money for some of your small desires and joys, as soon as poker turns into the main job, you often start to lose the joy of playing and become too dependent on the result.

It would be nice to spend the rest of your life in fashionable hotels playing poker in luxury casinos. But participation in freerolls and low-limit tournaments does not inspire much optimism.

For some very good players it can be a good business.
Also for staker who have good horses running. (For instance the big BBZ Staking company)
But you need financial discipline, consistency, learning and analysing, controlling your ego, good game selection and much more.
There is a book by Dusty Leatherass Schmidt: "Treat Your Poker like a Business".
It is a very interesting read and shows how this cash game player made millions of poker dollars.

Yes professional poker players and other professional gamblers in the US are taxed as a business. That means you pay 15.4% self employment taxes plus regular income taxes. That is how Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu are taxed. The only good thing is they can write off driving to the casino and their meals, and other expenses.

If gambling is not your primary source of income you are taxed at 25%.

poker is sort of like a business it take money to make money and have to be good with your money when owning a business as well as playing poker.
