Do you think play money actually helps develope any poker skill? Me personally, I do not think it helps the poker skill area because there are just too many people playing "bingo" with play money.
Just wanting some insight....be nice to know what others think about it

I guess it does once you get to the very high stakes, but I've never played those so I really can't tell. At the lower stakes, it's even donkier than a freeroll.

If you want to develop your game cheaply, go to a site with really micro stakes such as Everest Poker - www.EverestPoker.com . This is where I started and you have SNGs for as little as $.10+0.01, where the level of play is infinitely better than what you would see in play money tournaments.

^^^this also some compare the highest stakes of play money(sngs for 80k buyins) similar to the play of a 5 to 10$ real money sng, people work hard to get all that play money therefor they play at a decent level and its actually not bad.

No play money won't help you develop anything but bad habits really. I tried playing it once recently because i was super bored and wanted to see what it was like, and it is almost impossible to win a hand. You raise like 15x BB preflop, everybody calls. You hit TPTK and shove, everybody calls and somebody who stayed in with bottom pair hits 2 pair on the river or something. Ofc i only had the 1000 that you start with, so im sure everybody was just doing allin allin and reloading every few hands once they busted.

Go play freerolls or something (which are still terrible) if you want to learn for free. Tho i guess at high play money levels maybe the play is ok as said above (tho 5/10$ SnGs have VERY weak play in general so i wouldn't be suprised at all if play money high stakes was at the same level)

I personally like playing with play money but i am poor right now so i cant deposit. Anyways i have actually honed my skills very nicely on play money andworked up to high stakes plymoney which is more real than the low stakes. But it lets me deal wth the donks for one it maes me think about playing my hand more because most of themplay crap hands. It also helped me thow away my medioker hands which i had a bad habit of keeping but now i dont.

I'm playing play money right now, all I have left is 60c, but my playmoney is up to 100,000, depends where ther eis good level of play, if you go to the Holdem tables or the tourny's they are bad, but they have some good HORSE action as well as good Stud HL action.

Yes, play money does help. The high stakes play money sng's compare easily to $10 sng's. No, I'm not saying this because of something I think, I know it is true. I played play money for over a month so I could sell the chips and have a real money bankroll. I've been killing real money sng's after I got my cash for the chips. It's not an upswing or anything, the skill level is not near as good as it is in the play money sng's(higher stakes at least). If anybody wants to know something about play money, I'm the person to ask, I probably know more about it than anybody else in the forum

The low levels at play money are only good for getting a feel for how online poker plays. It might help one get a feel for the flow of the cards.

Freerolls play better than low level play money games.

Learning how to win at the low levels will serve you well tho. It can be done. I learned how so that on occasion I will play play money, but my stack is in the 400K range. I had to build it up. I play the 10K games, and pretty good poker is played there.

At the bigger levels players have pride and a Poker is Sport mentality. They may be on personal goals to 1 million chips, or 10 million or whatever, and take the game very seriously.

So, IMO yes, there is value in play money poker.

I usually only play with play chips if I am trying to learn a new game such as HORSE, people do play like idiots but atleast I can learn what and how to play for free.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say that I think it does have some value for beginners.

I'm mostly talking about people who'll get to the end of a hand and say "Oh - I have a straight!". We were all there once, and we all had to play a certain number of hands just to get used to the mechanics of the game. I think play money's ideal for that.

Will these people pick up some bad habits in play money games? Yeah, they probably will. But they'll bring loads of their own bad habits and poor ideas to the game as well, so it's not as if they're in a situation where they'd be awesome players, if only play money games hadn't taught them X bad habit.

I know I used them a bit learning stud games and high-low omaha.

I also believe that there is merit to the play chip tables as a learning tool. I started out playing those, and progressed to the big buy in SNG's, and those actually play a lot like a $5 single table SNG.

I agree with OzExorcist, play money is where everyone who is brand new to the game should start. If you are still trying to work out whether a flush beats a straight then you need to be playing play money. However I also believe that you should try and progress as quickly as possible to real money games once you have the mechanics down. This is for a few reasons, mainly that if beginners spend too much time on play money tables they will become bored and unknowingly develop bad habits. Also their learning curve and progression will be no where near as steep as opposed to playing on real money tables. There is nothing like the pain of losing some of your own hard earned money to get you to start thinking about and improving your game.
