Hellmuth isn't in the class of Dwan, Ivey, or such but its a stretch to say he isn't a good player. His game is designed do well in tournaments and his record in the WSOP
as well as other tourneys speaks for itself even if he is down recently.
As for his cash game. Everyone goes on about how he doesn't do well against other top pros. Well, except for television shows I would suspect that he spends more time playing softer games. Its called game selection. The idea isn't to try to beat a table full of pros. Its to find rich fish and take them down. Look at what Dwan is doing in Macau.
In Super System Doyle Brunson emphasizes that you should leave a game with too many good players in it. It isn't profitable.
Hellmuth is a fantastic marketing tool for poker. His antics draw viewers, many of whom become new players i.e. fish.
