Not everyone hates Phil Hellmuth...

I think what turns off most people is his attitude. He is WAY TOO cocky at the poker table (I have heard he is a nice guy everywhere else except at the table). He can't seem to take a bad beat lightly. Also, he can be disrespectful at times to both other players and the game of poker itself by whining incessantly, etc.

I personally enjoy watching him because it is very entertaining. He comes off as a jerk sometimes, but I think he kind of builds up his own image and acts to fit it.

Yeah now more than ever you have to think some of his antics are staged. The thing everybody over looks is that he is arguably the best professional tournament player in the world. Jesus Ferguson is probably the best but Phil has got to be in the discussion. The thing you should pay attention to is when he verbally analyses a hand talk about great information!

Jesus may be the best all-around, but Hellmuth has to be arguably the best NL tournament player alive. He is a NL tournament specialist.

And to address the OP, I like him, and have defended him here on these and a couple of other forums as well. I think he has done a lot for poker in the way of endorsement deals an the like for the younger players coming up now.

Edit: I just re-read my post and I didn't want to give the impression that I was saying Chris Ferguson was the best all around tournament player, but he has to be considered when talking about that distinction.

Several months ago I posted about how I didn't like his unsportmanlike conduct. I met him this summer at the wsop. He was funny, gracious, polite ... I still don't like his rants, but outside of that, he seems to be one hell of a good guy ...

Hellmuth is a jackass. A highly amusing jackass though:) I'm watching through last years WSOP right now, and Hellmuth was hilarious:)

Mario: Just because you won a crappy internet freeroll, where the style of play is always suicidal until the last couple of hundred, you think the pros are overrated?:bird:

I watched Phil win the Heads-up Championship tonight and laughed my butt off. With
the cards he got in the first match against "Jesus," he could not possibly have lost.
Hell, even I could have won. When he got rivered by the 9 in match two he acted as
if he'd never "been there, done that" himself. Then, in typical Phil Phashion, he storms
out of the room. I was hoping the rules would allow the Tournament Director to call
for shuffle and deal and begin charging the child absent from the table with missed
blinds.

Personally, I don't believe in showing hands when the viewing charge isn't paid. But
when Phil laid down winners, twice, I was shouting for Chris to show his. I think Phil
would have gone absolutely ballistic and Chris could have crushed him.

Yes, I know "Stars" and "Celebrities" frequently have their own schtick and are always
looking for a way to keep their names in the tabloids. (say anything you want, just
spell their name right) I think PH goes too far, too often, for it to be all schtick.

Without a doubt he is one of the best players alive. His problems seem to go way, way
beyond the pale. I think he should spend some of his winnings on professional help.
He is seriously immature. His rantings are paranoid.

Lastly, in the UltimateBet.com sweepstakes for a spot in the PH Poker Camp, I won.
My name wasn't selected. I didn't have to go.

You said, "I didn't have to go.", like you wouldn't have jumped at the chance to learn and play for a weekend with all of those professional poker players. Hell, I would almost lay odds that you would have gone had it been Phil Hellmuth by himself teaching the poker camp.

Aside from that, excelent post for someone with less than 5. Wecome to cardschat.

I don't hate Phil, but I don't care for him too much either. His skills are excellent in tournament play. I would agree with most of you that he is the best NL tourney player on the tour. Well, I think I just like seeing him lose just to see what he does. He is one of the most entertaining players to watch, and more entertaining when he gets a bad beat. His antics are very funny, almost as funny as the Unibomber!!

I enjoy watching Hellmuth play poker, he is a tremendous player who definitely helps poker with its ratings. He makes it real enjoyable to watch him get frustrated and see his reactions. I also watched the replay last night of the heads up final, and i loved it. When ferguson hit the river for a full house to take a ton of chips from hellmuth his reaction was priceless. He takes everything so personally and leaves nothing back, thats why i like him.

Hey, UncleChuckle. Before you go picking my posts apart for spelling mistakes, you should probably make sure you run all of yours through a spell check.

I would have bet 100 bucks that he had two "L's" in there when I posted that. No worries, the next post of his that I looked at he misspelled calculate, maybe ill go pick on that one. Or maybe, just maybe, Ill refrain from being a douchebag that corrects other posters' spelling/grammar. Nah.

There are only two poker players I really like to watch.. Danniel Negrono (sp) is one and Phil is the other.. it might be like watching a train wreck but he is entertaining. Of course if he is really that imature in real life I could never stand to be around him!

I've read Phil's book, and I got some useful info out of it. Other than attributing his attitude to his upbringing, I think he may be using it to throw other players off of their game. If people are constantly irritated they tend to focus less on the game and more on the whiner. Just one man's opinion, maybe right, maybe not.

Mario, if you don't think that pros have an edge you are mistaken. At my last tournament there were four "pros" on board, with 216 non-pros. Lanye Flack won one of the tournaments and Chip Jett won another. Both destroyed the cash games they were in. I used to play as a pro in Europe with no other income for 6 years. Believe me there is a difference and your win of a freeroll with quick blind raise ups is nothing more than a crap shoot. Now I just run tournaments but it is still the same players making final tables.

I like Phil since he really keeps himself in the center of attention cuz he acts like this . Other players are definitley distracted , maybe not all , but some , and distraction is one bad thing when playing Poker as we all know - ergo advantage for Phil :flute:

Its not him - it just makes for easy tv :hello:

Oh look its Phil again, and anything he may mutter is seen as him getting annoyed

Check out Mike Matusow (apologies on spelling) he goes ballistic and bright red :stupid: (remember when he right out insulted Raymer who later refused to shake his hand).

If everyone was a polite little robot never showing emotion would people be interested quite so much?

Just a thought

He has the type of personality that really bugs me but because of that he could probally get me to try to catch him in a bluff. Which would probally work in his favour. So do I like him, not overly because he gets on my nerves but I think his personality is good for No Limit Poker.
