doesnt happen that often for me, once or twice a month with playing everyday.
2 that spring to mind though:
once it happened on the turn when i landed my one and only royal flush (although im not counting it as i still feel a bit cheated)
the other time it happened in an MTT, approx 200 left out of over 1000, big stack at the table was bullying everyone and i get dealt pocket A's, true to form he raised before i acted, i was about to push all in when i got disconnected! by the time i got back to the table i was so mad i pushed with Q9 suited and busted out!

If and when I lose my connection I'm on the phone to my ISP immediately. I pay a lot for the fastest connection they offer and I expect it to work !

Annoying?

Hi all,
Probably the only thing that can annoy me while playing poker is the famous disconnect. I have dial up which you expect it to happen more frequently but it shouldn't, a lot depends on what poker room your playing.
Pokerstars has not once disconnected me, it runs smooth just like how it should but there are other poker rooms software which disconnects continously which is why i'm only with 3 places now.

And yes it always seems to disconnect at the most improper place like Alfoldem says. I've noticed Ultimate Bet goes through server problems depending on the time of day and you get that big yellow box come up stating they are trying to re-connect which could take up to 5 minutes, too late for your hand then.

I have seen some players who get disconnected pretty much every single turn, they are not only wasting everyone's time but there own time and money too, you can't play a game while that is happening and dial up isn't the problem with those players, it's either a very old pc or the software isn't really compatible with their system.

If your disconnecting a lot ( more than once in a game ) you should consider uninstalling and re-installing the software, try a virus scan, malware scan and spyware scan, also scan the software once it's been downloaded as these things can interfere with connectivity if you have them on your pc. Another thing you could do is try and clear all the clutter off your pc which you don't use, if you don't have at least 50% resources free on your pc poker and casino software can run slow to the point of disconnecting you.

If nothing else works and your still getting disconnected frequently you may have to do what I did and remove the poker rooms that do not run how they should and look for a poker software that does. Hated having to do that but then I also hated having to lose places like pacific poker because american players aren't allowed. ( but hey thats another story)

Tony :)

Man, I am really pissed off by the arrogant responses from those here who have "never had" a disconnect? Really? You should call Ripley's because that's a truly unbelieveable feat. However, for the rest of us who dwell in reality, disconnections are a genuine threat to our poker productivity. I'm going through a terrible patch right now. Getting disconnected left and right, but only when playing poker!! I can websurf all day and night, but the minute I sit down to play on Full Tilt or PokerNordica, the boot-off's begin. I have no idea how much money I've thrown away on active hands, but I've been ahead on a lot of them at the disconnect. And I've been in the top 30 of four different tourneys when I've been booted and either blinded out before I could return, or got back with a crippled stack.

I've talked until I'm blue in the face to the poker room support and my ISP (Charter Communications hi-speed cable). Nothing wrong that anybody can see, or will admit. Meanwhile, I'm afraid to even sit down anymore. Never had a boot-off? Good for you. Sorry that some of us are "ridiculous" with our technical problems.

I know

Hi all,
I know what your saying RammerJammer, it's happened to me before as stated above, more often than not it's not even an ISP issue but rather the poker software, and no you won't get the poker support to admit there is a problem with their server or connection.
You say it mostly only happens when you play poker, that should tell you something, the software is either not compatible with your pc or something worse. I cannot run bodog on my pc because it's windows98, bodog software only runs on later versions of windows, their loss.
Some poker rooms have viruses, this is probably not mentioned enough but it happens, especially with new poker rooms which don't have the budget needed for the security when starting out. Saying that even some well known poker rooms have viruses too.

My point is it is hard enough to win consistently without the added worry of disconnects, if your disconnecting frequently you shouldn't be, so it might be worth trying another poker room. Also check the things mentioned in the above post, more often than not it is something simple.

Tony:)

Next time you get disconnected while playing poker, run "HiJackThis" and post the log here and I'll take a look at it. Another thing you can do is run ProcessExplorer while you are on, that will tell you what is running at the time.

I have Charter as well and I don't like them very much. Here's my latest interaction with them:

I found out they were offering a faster speed than I had so I looked up their phone number in the phone book. When I called that number it had been disconnected, so I called their 1-800 number. This is the conversation I had.

ME: Hi I'd like to upgrade my internet service to the highest speed.

HER: What's your name and information please?

(I gave it to them)

HER: In order to upgrade service you have to prepay for it.

ME: Can't you just bill me?

HER: No you have to prepay at your local office.

ME: OK, where's my local office, the phone number in the phone book is disconnected.

HER: I can't give you that information.

ME: OK, what's the phone number then.

HER: I'm not authorized to give you that information.

ME: You won't even give my the phone number so I can find where the office is?

HER: It's against our policy to give out phone numbers.

Dumbfounded, I said ok thank you I guess, and hung up. I then called the 1-800 number back, got a different person who had my internet speed upgraded within 45 seconds.

I have charter also, and am mostly happy with it. No horror stories.

And I know where the local office is.

FTP does not seem to have a great connection and when people with terrible internet connection or people who play during a storm play on FTP it doesn't make anything better. I have DC'd maybe once but that was when the entire FTP system went down, in my mind, if there is a storm; DONT PLAY. If you have a bad internet connection; DONT PLAY. It's just annoying to the rest of us, I believe you have to wait a full NINETY seconds if somebody DC's. An entire hand can be played in ninety seconds.

Sometimes you don't know in advance that you are going to have problems when you start a three hour MTT.
