What do you think are the biggest differences between online and live poker?
Personally, I think the differences are vast. Especially, when looking at the psychological aspects of it.

I've never played Live, but I plan to do so when it gets warmer outside. I believe that maybe playing Live would be better since you have the chance to observe your opponents faces and body language to get a read on them, at least i'm hoping that's how it will go.

I notice pretty much all of the people on this sight play online fairly exclusively.
Online misses out on, in my estimation, about half of the game. Between, the social aspects, the body languages, and the mind games you may be missing out on the better half. Way fun! Best advice I can give, if you plan on going live, is to study your own habits and figure out your tells. Then you can use that to your advantage. It takes a lot of time, studying and, in the end, conscious effort but is well worth it.

I think the psychological aspects are fundamental to win live games. The minimum reading about it is enought to say who will win. But if u have a good feeling, you can take advantage up your opponents also. I've been playing live games and i had won more than online. I prefer it.

Because of the fact that you see so many more hands in online poker than you would at a live table (assuming the same amount of time spent at each) I think math-based approaches will work more often online versus live.

Fewer hands means greater variance.

It can be argued, however, that other aspects of the live game more than make up for this increased variance such as the ability to use tells and get "feelings" about how particular players play.

So maybe it can be said that at live tables one relies more on INSTINCT whereas online one relies more on mathematical methods of play.....

Agreed with all of the above. I have been playing online for about 10 years, and it is much more difficult to get a read for somebody just by watching them on a computer screen. Playing live is much more fun, but is also much more challenging. I have only played a handful of games live at various casinos, so it was very difficult to get a read on my opponents. But there is nothing greater than sitting down at a table with other folks and playing a game. All of my experiences have been positive so far at the live tables. The people are usually friendly and talkative. It can be a little nerve-wracking when you realize that most of the folks at the table are regulars and know each other and you are the outsider, but that can also work to your advantage because they have absolutely no intel on you.

Less hands in live poker. I see less aggression, but I normally play fixed limit games live.

I only play online poker because of the convenience, meaning poker is always literally at your fingertips. Started playing Internet poker because I was living in New York back in 09 and for the love of god I couldn't find a LIVE poker game in Brooklyn so I had to resort to 'underground' home games in Manhattan which lets just say wasn't in my comfort zone. If I had access to a good live game around the clock it would be bye bye to the computer...... LIVE POKER is POKER.

Personally i prefer live. Its how i started and when i turned 21 I was at foxwoods every weekend i could. I love the feel of casinos, and the poker room especially, its not so much a grind. You can talk with the people there, the dealer, and everything feels REAL.

Moving allin online is a completly different feeling from moving allin at the live table. I love it, online to me takes some of the fun out of it.

There are many benefits also to playing live, and reading your opponents for me is a big one. I always use tells in my game. I pay attention.

EX. Last time i was at the live table I picked up a tell on this guy. Everytime he would raise and say out loud "Raise" or the amount such at "$40" It was a bluff or he was weak. Every other time he had a hand or felt strong, he would just throw the chips in. The point being a lot of times players act strong when they are weak, and weak when they are strong.

you just don't have that kind of stuff online. How long someone takes to call isn't dependable because he could be doing it on purpose or who knows he is multi-tabling 5 tables, or stepped away. Point being you have no idea whats going on on the other end of the computer.

The atmoshere is great too. Well good luck!

Playing live is not as comfortable, you have to drive somewhere, there are tipping fees and you cannot take a break to grab something from the fridge.

Online: You play different people and cant see their face/physical feature.
Live: You play same people and can see their face/physical feature.

Little quote: Online players, dont listen to live players. Live players, dont listen to online players.

In live poker you are playing with real people. Online you only think you are playing with real people, you don't really know.

Live you need to have more control of yourself as well as you can get more information from the other players.

I think it depends a little on the stakes. Live, the lowest level is the 1-2 game, so that's where the beginners and most casual players play. Online, you can start out at the penny games. By the time the online players reach 1-2, they have much more experience.

Online players tend to more aggressive with larger pots then what I'm used to live .... although that might just be the casino I play at.

There are some players online that are so brave behind their computer and can be so rude with name calling and so disrespectful to women. I don't believe that would be allowed in a live game.I never played Live, but always wanted to.

physiological tells

Playing online you get less amount information/read as you cannot look at how they react to different situations but playing live yo can observe and notice a few tells by way of their reactions, habits, expressions, the things they say. So playing live you might have to keep your senses of sight and hearing sharp so that will give you a better chance of picking up valuable information that can help you playing with them in future hands.
Basically you have to understand the way people play. If you get the understanding of the game or type of decision a person makes in different situations, it is more or less the same online and live.

Although you cannot study your opponents reactions while playing online you can get some information by a studying couple of things.
Things like bet-sizing can give you some information in crucial moments about whether the opponent's hand is weak/strong. Also the time taken to make a decision online can also provide key indications but you have to observe all these things and look for the patterns and the irregularities in them to have a good sense of conviction. Every player is different in some way or another, so try and make adjustments when required accordingly.:icon_joke

Live poker and online no limit holdem both function the same exact way. Both ways help you really understand the psychology of it.

Variance is the answer.
Anyone can be a winner over a small sample playing live....
