We often discuss poker etiquette when playing live poker - but what about when playing online?

It is so much easier to not pay attention to etiquette when you are not facing your opponents across a table - and bullies love to hide behind their computer screen.

Read this article and let's discuss it:

Online Poker Etiquette

Which of these drives you the most crazy - and are there other things we should be doing?

I think #1 is my biggest pet peeve - I hate it when players berate a player who is not playing good or try to tell them what they are doing wrong. We make our money off the less experienced players - let's not intimidate them into not playing - or teach them how to play during the game!

The chat box in general. I usually have it turned off unless I'm in a home game. Too many abusive players who tap the glass and disrespect the game.

For me the main Online Poker Etiquette is to be respectful of all players, never insult or ridicule anyone.
If someone doesn’t follows the rules then we should let them know what they are doing wrong as speaking in languages other than English in a Cardschat Tournament.

Other than that is OK: :call2:

One thing that bugs me is when someone shoves all in, and goes heads up to a flip with a pocket pair (last night it was 88 vs A10), and loses and they berate the other player for making a 'donk call'. The odds are almost exactly 50/50 in cases like these, you cant expect to win each time!

Yesterday something happened at a table I joined that got underneath my skin a little. It was clear that two people had a conflict where one was accusing the other of purposely tanking. Now I don't like slow play either, but I have found it does very little good to confront someone over it. So, the player who was aggravated by the person who was apparently playing slow (again, I had just joined the table) proceeds to tank himself to make a point. What was the point? The player wanted others at the table to join in and rebuff the original player who was tanking. So, for the next several minutes this player, feeling quite righteous in the moment, proceeds to tank every hand--rebuking the rest of us for not joining in the dispute. I probably could have ended it by saying something but I just didn't want to participate in this nonsense.

To the original topic of the OP and the article referenced, I would say that I tend to agree that folks are too quick to point out the flaw in others' game. Exploiting flaws in others is an integral part of the game--no doubt. I suppose the one exception is that player that is going all-in every hand, which does get tiresome for those of us who enjoy free rolls. But, even here it does present an opportunity to chip up, and typically this is occurring early enough in the tournament to where if you do suffer a bad beat which ends your tournament, you haven't much time invested in it.

I personally chat very little but I don't mind the chat of other players good or bad . I feel it gives me more information about players and that is always a good thing .

It feels like a never ending battle. But the arrogance is multiplied 10x fold when behind a screen - Specifically regarding someone that berates others. Sometimes I will engage sometimes I ignore. But unless the poker site is willing to ban people or block their comments there is not much any of us can do except state we do not like it.

I drained someone's chip stack and had to deal with him telling everyone what he thought I had the next few hands until he got knocked out.

Most of the complaints I have issues in the past were due to people being vulgar, hateful and racist and each time the site said they would look at it and suggested I mute chat? Duh are you interested in knowing about the abuse or do you prefer to ignore it?

That was years ago pre 2010 often times I have chat off so usually not even sure if people are talking or not now. I try to remember to turn it on for cc games but often forget

Speaking of Etiquette

Ladies and gentlemen, I have been on this site for about a month now; and love posting things/reading responses. Having wonderful poker etiquette as this place (your post) does, where is the quickest way to host your own forum/topic thus creating your own? Thanks guys and gals.

There more I play the more I see that "etiquet" is only an concept in poker. If you want to figure out something about yourself, your family or your what you should do with your life just run over some1 at micro-low stackes and ... cherish =) But i've seen it even at hgher stackes not from people who are bad players so... That being said keeping class would be nice. After al we are here to play and not to win constantly... althought that too would be nice

I'm guilty of pet peeve #1. I berated players including myself for a bad play of hands. It is always when I am laughing...because it is very funny. Nothing mean spirit but bad players are hilarious not so much when I am on the losing end.

It's tough for me. I hate the berating thing too but at the same time, it gives valuable information. Essentially, the kind of player that berates someone usually has an inflated opinion of their game which helps to exploit later, you know?

Rather then pointing out problems with a hand played, coaching some will say,or degenerating a players country, why not applaud a player and say next time may bring more luck, many hide behind there screens and chat boxs ,because they are cowards in real life and society

I think that you need to focus on the game and try not to be distracted by messages in the chat. the only thing that can sometimes be done is to show the hand that was dropped in order to confuse the opponent in the subsequent game.

really that kind of insulting players who use a lot of chat are seen in freerolls, in real money tournaments and with high BUY / IN you do not see that kind of players ... most of the times they use it to annoy and try to deconcentrate the players, it is also very bad taste reproach some bad play to other players when they have made a mistake, I personally do not pay much attention to chat or what other players say, we must be tolerant not to lose patience in a tournament and try to understand that unfortunately is something that can not be controlled that is part of online poker, we must accept it and be very tolerant, patience is a virtue that not everyone has

For me, the most important thing is the respect of players of any strengths or weaknesses, when I have disrespectful players in my game, I turn off the chat and do not pay attention to such players, I agree that you need to have respect for all poker players!

I think we should be able to handle these situations rather than outrage, offended.
I personally do not bother anything, these are just more information for me, sometimes even fun.

Tip # 5 - Keep up with the action
Please, when possible don’t take an overly long time to act especially on basic pre-flop actions. Yes take your time on important post flop decisions, but don’t take excessively long to make basic decisions. Slowing down the game is bad for everyone involved and a too slow game might frustrate a losing player and get them to leave the table.

I do not agree!
I think every single player has the right to maximize the available time!
why should I hurry for others?

Yeah I don't know much about online etiquette but I generally do know that you must not be mad when you get beat and talk all kinds of crap that's just pathetic

#2 and #4 have an overlap: chat about the current play, chips on the table, still being played. I asumed this was forbidden, as it is very similar to collusion (players on 1 table sharing information), I've seen it once and sent an email to support for 'collusion attempt'. For me this should be forbidden, the worst in the list.

Players calling other players fish/donk/idiot etc. I don't mind, so far I've seen this done by the less good players, so it's info for me.
