Hello Room

Now I've been playing poker for quite some time now and online for about
3 years now. I am not claiming to be a pro probably far from it but I do know my game is decent, well lets just put it this way I have done pretty good playing live poker in a brick and mortar casino. Online it is something totally different no matter what changes I make to my game can't seem to get over the 200 $ hump. Then I hear about guys making 100,000 dollars playing online, I don't know any personally but I'm just wondering are they really making money like that online playing poker:eek:

There are indeed people making that kind of money (and more) online, but they are generally very good and by no means the norm.

Not a cash table player myself and never expect to be. Being playing about 3 years and make money every week from mainly freerolls and small buyin MTT's. At the moment I average $10-$15 a day. Each year this gets higher. Those make the kind of money you mention much be playing with large banrolls and for high stakes. Hope things work out.

I would say this is definitely possible, and probable being accomplished. However, I see 3 ways to do this. 1. A HUGE tourny score to jumpstart you. 2. an insane amount of tables and hours put in, at an avg win rate. 3. Be so much better than the competition that you burn through the limits.

I think I see what the problem is here...

Quite simply, the average live player is much, much, much worse than the average online player. And before anyone takes great offense to that, I learned to play live and it's still my favourite form of the game. But you can't fight the reality. The average live $1/$2 game is probably full of droolers who just can't wait to give their money away - taking it from them is a relatively simple prospect. But play $200NL online, the same stakes, and you'll likely be up against a table of mostly solid players who are going to make far fewer mistakes.

So yes, absoutely, people make big sums of money playing online. But they're either much better than the average live player, or they've gotten very lucky.

Tend to disagree with this post...it seems to me as if love players have much better head on their shoulders then the online players....but you also have over 5k in posts so I know you know what you're talking about. Is this at casinos or poker games that you host by chance?

You said it before I could. Online players are much better than live players. However, the ability to read others is really what makes my live game profitable. That, and the fact that live players are just SO BAD.

When I'm talking live games I'm talking casino games - I only really play cash games live ($1/$3 NL is my regular game, and occasionally $1/$2 PLO) but the same goes for tournaments. What I said above would apply pretty much the same to home games too though, as well as pub/bar poker and whatever other types you care to come up with.

Unless you deliberately organise your home or bar games so that you're only playing against experts, but why would you do that?!?

Online and live are very different games. In order to be making some good money today online one needs to have a pretty good understanding of the game and run huds and be able to exploit opponents somehow. In live games the typical 2005 nitty style can still win in a 2/5 games but that style will probably have trouble in todays 10NL games and might only break even.

It's absolutely true, and a very well known fact in the poker community. A pretty good rule of thumb often quoted is that 200NL live and 25NL online are at roughly similar skill levels. And my live experience certainly bears that out as well.

I would even go ahead and claim that it's lower than 25NL more like 5NL. It was 25NL few years back , games got a lot tougher. It also depends on what networks one plays I guess.

It's still pretty easy to make money online. All that's necessary is to be / become good enough to win at some level, and then to find and play at that level. As your game improves, you can move up if you decide to.

What catches some live players is thinking they can play at the same stakes. This ignores the reality that live entry-level fish play $1/2 because it's the lowest available. Online entry-level fish can play as low as .01/.02 depending which site they're on. At each level, the proportion of fish tends to decline, so by the time you get to NL200, 100 or even 50, you need to have more game to win than you do at 1/2 live.

That blows my mind, I'm glad I'm able to hear that here...it makes sense because the talent pool is so much bigger online then at a casino

it isnt quite like the good ol days where you deposit $10 and run it up to thousands. it takes some definite skill, hard work, and determination to get up to those stakes without going bust.
