I would consider myself a above average skilled online poker player. I make many deep runs in most tournements i play. However me and some friends got together to play and I sucked!! I couldnt get reads, I couldnt bluff or anything! So i was wondering what skills can I take from online to against real ppl and what do I need to work the most on? I tried to play the same style as online, tight-aggressiandive, and it did not work at all! We are playing again next saturday and im trying to keep from being their ATM, what do you guy think is my problem??

Did you get impatient? Did you have issues sizing your bets since you didn't have a number on the screen to count the stack/pot sizes for you?

If it's just for fun, and your friends aren't poker players, chances are they're calling stations. If that's correct, it's probably better not too bluff and solely value bet.

And by above average skill, do you mean profitable? The average online poker player loses money hehe

You can't bet as much in live poker as you can online. You need to find your spots. Also change your bet sizes up. I know a lot of people just use the 1/2 pot pot and stuff like that. I think people will call you down more or just start slow playing hands if you do that. Also live poker is slower than online. You don't see a lot of hands so if you miss you don't always have a good opportunity to bluff. I think if you take it slow and be patient you will get the hang of it.

first off, sloooooowwww doooowwwnnnn

online is much faster and you find your rewards much quicker.

also, like mentioned by rick1983 pick your spots. wait for the time to strike and make it count. you will learn a lot by playing with your friends. its much better than learning at a casino where im guessing the buyins are a bit higher.

good luck chap!

Patience is a big thing when you play live.. because you see a lot fewer hands.

Steve you may be dealing with a bit of performance anxiety.
The remedy for this is to actually ramp up your internal excitement before you sit down at the table and while you are playing at the table.

When you do this, you practically will yourself to be more confident and relaxed. Once you are at that place emotionally, your play will jump up exponentially. I have a friend whose playing is slightly above average until you make him angry. But, when he is pissed off it's like watching a genius play. It's incredible to watch. Like a well programmed bot, this guy literally wipes out the table hand after hand.

The ability to control and discipline your emotions is the key.

My biggest trouble between online and live was and somewhat still is, chip counting.Online you know whats been put into the pot but live you have to keep up with whats been put into the pot.1st time I played live I drove the dealer crazy asking about chip count. To be safe I always make a verbal bet or raise.I'm with everyone else on playing with more patience live .Online is much more fast pace.

It takes a while to get a read on your opponent when playing live especially if you're new or maybe you are easy to read. It's normal , just hang back and watch them play for a few games see if you can get a read then go for it. Once you get a hang of it everything else will come naturally (online skills will kick in)

Took a beating at the casino at first, my problem was I cannot get a quick read on a player, by the time I get a read they already won and you can't mark them , different players every night , atleast with your friends you can prepare for the next week game.

Once you get a hang of it I find it much easier to play live, for example, if you are playing a weak player online and you are not sure if he's bluffing , you can tell real easy in live if he's bluffing , the reason is he's new to the table and you can get a quick read on him, you can't really see him online so you have to read from the cards. It still amazes me sometimes how a lot of new players to the table try to "be serious" when bluffing lol
