For online play, am I only playing against people in my region or is it everybody..

or is it everybody in the world who are using that pokersite. I know this might be a noob question but say im playing on pokerstars somewhere out on an island with a population of 1000 people, am I only going to be playing against them or against everybody else in the world who are using pokerstars?

Generally speaking, when you play on an online room, you play against all the other players who are logging in around the world to that same room. But it is possible that some countries have restrictions and then you are limited to only playing against other players in that same country.

Yes ,you play against the whole world, except against Italy, Spain, Belgium, france, Denmark and Estonia they have their own client...

It's like nabmom says: you play against every countryes except those who only play between them.

I'm portuguese and I play against all other countryes but I will confess you one thing: if I only play against portuguese guys I think I quit poker cause they don't know to play, they got more luck than skills, they pay with every hand and you know what: they win with any hand.

Correction: We, brave Belgiumians, play also against the world. (We had our own client for a while, but luckly now we are with the big pile).

Playing at pokerstars you'll be up against the whole world. I bet if you are playing from some island you'll have a tough time finding any local players there unless you make a home game and invite your island friends ofcourse.

You play vs all the people who use the pokerstars in the huge world?, but sometimes it seems that only people who live near play agains me.

Whatever client you are using you are playing ageinst everyone using that client, so it depends if your client is world wide or limited to certain regions.

It's kinda both, for the most part you are playing against everyone,but poker stars "fences" off certain regions ie you are not playing against players living in france

Play with the world, it is very interesting when the opponent with another country.

I play on Pokerstars and usually there are many players around the world, many of russia and germany... the truth that the internet is amazing.

Estonia is not on its own client for atleast 8 months. Since i started back then and have always been playing "against the world". But still mostly against russians and germans

Very strange question where do you live on the moon or something))) online poker is like internet web it's everywhere.

For me I think there is much merit in playing regional sites if you can find them.

Sites such as Ladbrokes, or william hill, or gambling sites are made up of vastly regional players, or even 888 poker

Due to pokerstars and their extreme advertising and exposure anyone who is serious about poker unless they are an outside the box thinking person they are going to go for pokerstars and full tilt poker (providing they have access to pokerstars)

for me being more unconventional in my strategy for profit I focus on specific games and specific sites, even if traffic is bad when the big tournaments and cash games do come around its pretty easy to just buy into the main tournament they have where the field is going to be soft as hell and unless I run into a cooler I can pretty much guarantee getting back at least my buy in at the very worst

Hulinda, it is actually a very logical question (read the responses to the question and you'll see). Some countries have limited the poker play of some online sites to only players within that country. Despite it being the "world wide" internet, there are places where you can only play against players from your own country.
