It appears to me the only time people chat online is when they want to berate you for sucking out or laugh at you when you get sucked out on.

Was there ever any online courtesy or am I playing the wrong games?

There is in the private Cardschat tourneys (and other private tourneys). In the micro buyin levels you got alot of that b.s. on the chatbox. Some of it is retarded. Occassionally though you'll find/meet some decent folks too.

wat??? That would be stupid and -EV.

The only time I chat online is to reinforce the fishiness of fishes, i.e. telling them "good fold" when I was actually bluffing, or "bad luck, nh" when they overplayed their hand and gave me huge implied odds.

The only reason to talk aggressively is when you're really good at HU and want to challenge fishes with strong egos to HU4ROLLS.

One chooses to play with every weapon he has at his disposal.I think that most of the times is leggitimate when they try to distract your attention and make you lose your concentration ( because that is just what they are doing!!!) simply because it's a race,a battle that one tries to win with his wit, another with his luck and so on.The purpose justify the means!!!Don't you agree?

I've always seen bad behavior in the freerolls. When I started playing private buy-ins it was nice. I just posted a tread yesterday about playing in a private game and there was one player acting like a jackass the whole game, flooding the chat box. I didn't know if it because some watch to much television and watch the pro's mouth off the whole game or if it's the safety of it being cyber space. I am just glad I have the option of mute

the only time i will berate a player is when he is pissing off the whole table or laughing it up after a suckout. nothing beats private games, take a beat and you get a gg and an occasional sorry. talking crap on a computer is what i call an "internet gangsta", most people who do this would never attempt it in a live game because there are consequences.

I think in public games this might be the case but in my experience quality forum site tourney are generally pretty friendly. I have seen some guys sounding off in these but it usually through frustration and is very limited.

Online Courtesy lol, thats like saying Military Intellegence, it just doesnt exsist. Ok it does, but it is rare.

Really, I think its 1/2 and 1/2 gamemanship and idiots. Some of them are doing it just to try to rattle you. But I think there are alot of idiots who think whatever they are holding is the best hand and no matter what you play your stupid for doing it...even if it was a good play. And some just cant handle loseing and have to blame someone else for their mistakes.

Basicly you have 2 choices. Either mute them if it does make you mad and get you off your game. Or you can play the game with them if you dont get mad easily.
I tend to be nice when I play, even to someone who is being a total jerk to me. I will just tell them they are right, I am a donk/newbie/fish/ect. If they are just trash talking your trash talk probably wont effect them. And if they are an idiot, why bother.
The only time I get into it with someone is when they are berateing someone else. The idea being the guy/gal who is being a jerk might get mad that I stepped into something that isnt my business. And the guy/gal I am defending might decide I am a nice guy and not go after my stack as hard as they might have otherwise. Not always, but worth the try if they do deicde you are their friend.
I always keep my chat clean thou. Last thing you want is to get your account suspended or banned because someone else is an idiot. And it seems to piss the other person off more when your rude without being vulgar for some reason.

Never seen anything in a CC tourney like this. Always friendly(ish).

I think it's all good, as long as you're not too vulgar or insulting.

You can really get inside a players head and throw them off their game if you use this little tool effectively.

I once played a guy and I made him hate me so much, he would call any raise I made just to try and KO me.

I just kept commenting on his hands and criticising his play.

This is not a tactic I employ now but it can be very effective if used correctly.

I think you're giving more credit to some of the internet cretins than they deserve, the ones who say things online that they wouldn't dream of saying to someone's face b/c they would have to face the consequences if they did. Talking to throw someone off their game is one thing, and it's effective, but I've seen people called "ni**er,""fa**ot,""pu**y,""bitch," etc. in online tourneys, and that's just taking the tactic way too far.

Would you talk that way in a live cash game? In a tourney at a casino? Hell no! If you did, you'd get your ass kicked or you'd get thrown out of the casino! So if it's not acceptable behavior in real life, it shouldn't be acceptable online (and it's not in CC tourneys, at least). Those that use the anonymity of the internet to say and do things b/c they wouldn't in person are incredibly cowardly weasels.

I think online chat is mostly annoying and completely ineffective for getting reads or any other useful information. Sometime you can use it to tilt someone but I usually have it turned off unless I get bored.

If it bothers you I would advise you to turn it off.

Wouldnt it be great if you could track who and where they are when they do this. I would just love to reply that I am gonna come get them, then post their address:secruity:

I personally don't speak unless spoken to and it's usually short and sweet. If someone says 'nh', I'll thank them as not to be rude. If I see a well played hand, I'll offer gongrats. If someone's nice to me, I'll probably chat with them but not much.

I find though that most chat have gotten to people calling each other degrading names and complaining about beats (I won't lie and say I've never complained about a bad play in the past).

I have my chat turned off when I play online so that I don't get distracted or frustrated by comments that other players will make. Therefore I never end up saying nice hand or anything like that because I can't see other's responses. I figure it is better to just stay quiet and oblivious to conversation as opposed to get into an online argument what not.

There should be an unspoken curd. as there usually is in Live games but I don`t see it. It`s almost rampid I`ve found. I had a guy once tell me he would pary for my kids to get hit by a bus on the way to school. I think PS controls this chat a bit better just by having req. to even chat at table. You have to hava the BI in your acct. to even chat ata table. FTP has nothing at all and any joker can comment.

Try the mute button... Mute each player leave them muted... They can talk mad smack and you never hear it. Just like when a tree falls in the woods. It dont matter what people say when you stomp a mud hole in their chip stack.

Why?
Yes...chat that is rude and sometimes offensive can be annoying, but it can also be a weapon to gauge what kind of a person you are playing.

Lets say you're big blind and no-one raises and you see a flop and hit, say trips. Lets say your trips win against their AA and you get called a fish, donk...whatever, that tells me they a) don't know the game of poker, b) they're not watching the game or c) they are just trying to rile you. (After all, they let you see that free flop)

Either way, I'd rather see what people are saying, good, bad, funny, stupid..., I don't have to get involved and it can help.

I'm from a family, where if you let little digs affect you, you'll get eaten alive. Combine that with some experience playing poker, and it's like water of a ducks back for me. I actually enjoy it, because you know their on tilt. Either they just lost and are angry, or they won and are too confident. Then i take their chips.

I think you are possibly missing out, what people say can give you clues when playing. There are much fewer tells online than there are in live games, so make the most of them!

I think a lot of the bad mouthing comes from frustrated guys who have no control over their real lives and compensate online. Oh, and alcohol is usually involved.

I try not to type in the box no matter how frustrated i am. I often type something then erase it instead of send it. True statements like "good fold i'd tripped my pocket aces". By sending that stuff you are giving away valuable info. Also by not reading everything that comes across you are missing out on info. You have to take it all with a grain of salt, but there are subtle cues a jackass can give you. Like if you watch a guy lose 3/4 of his stack, cuss some out, call bs, then go all in next hand, he probably has crap.

I couldn't agree more. I can't tell you how many times I've let some idiot at the poker table get me off my game and making stupid decisions to try and knock him/her around a little. I don't let it get to me as much anymore because I've made great freinds with the "mute chat" button.

I also play with a lot of people who say "nicely played," "well done," and you've always got people with versions of "nh" so online politeness hasn't gone completely down the tubes.

I found nice folks even at the tables in the astronomers freerolls on PS but have to admitt that they are the minority...
Nowadays i even thank a table for not having been abusive, which is noteworthy when it happens...
