I would appreciate some "constructive criticism" on a point or two.First,I play mostly MTT'S of 45 or 90 players and my ROI runs about 200% month to month in the $3 to $6 range.Anyway,I have an ongoing "arguement" with a friend of mine about something and it's this :I enjoy playing the pokerstars daily "Astronomers freerolls" and I play one a day and I finish "ITM" at least 1 or 2 times a week(this week 3!")For instance,Iplaced 32nd in a PLO tourney this week and it was the 1st time I ever played PLO for $ or for "free"!I was also "ITM" in an 8-game tourny and again,it was my 1st 8-game tourny for $ or otherwise. Here's the arguement:My friend says those "freerolls" are easy to finish "ITM"and it's no accomplishment. When I say to him"then let me see YOU win one"he says he doesn't have the 3 to 5 hours it takes to win one but he could if he wanted too! When I ask him :who is easier to beat;tight-aggressive "good" poker players or players who go all-in half the time (4000 of them!!)he doesn't have an answer. He says I have a distorted view of myself and my "pretty good" STATS are worthless because I play against "Bad" poker players!I know the truth is somewhere in the middle but to whose side do you think it leans?I've been playing poker almost 40 years and have never had a losing year(or month for that matter!)All right-give it to me straight!!"MentatYabba"

What do you make, like $1 a month for 40 years? If that statement was true you really wouldn't need to be playing $3-$6 45-90 player MTTs.

But let's throw that exaggeration out for a minute. In regards to the freerolls, in my experience, it is hard to ITM on Stars. Just the sheer number of people (bad or good), makes it difficult to finish in the top 88 or top 100.

If you truly run as well as you say you do, you are doing yourself a disservice by playing the freerolls. They are wasting a good chunk of your time that you could be spending cashing in an MTT.

It's tough to make it into the final 100 of a 4,000 player tournament. That's why 97.5% of players don't in any given tournament. Silly answer, but true.

You take the time to write but you really didn't say anything! You re-stated what I said, then put "lol" behind it.You have to have an opinion 1 way or the other! Is it really so hard to believe that I don't lose $ playing poker?Sure,Ican lose a session or 2,but I've never lost 5 times in a row!I'm only playing 2/4 or 3/6 Hold'em,if I get behind,I come back up and leave with a (small) win.Easy to do month to month! Now online,Idon't know,I'm still learning but for 6 months I'm slightly ahead-but I'm ahead!

They are hard, theres no doubt about that. Not sure what works best in these freerolls though; skill or reckless abandon. The best that i ever did in a 5000 person freeroll was 15th place and i did it stark raving drunk. I almost never play while im drinking but hey, i had nothing to lose but a bit of time. Ill bet there are players that can weave through the thousands of people on purpose time and again, but i just dont know.

Dear MentatYabba,

It seems like this quote by "smd173" is the one that says you probably exargerated, not me ;)

Sorry,Snowmobiler,Anyway this week I placed 3rd in bodog's $500 Freeroll (Iwon $45). and in Stars PLO freeroll (ticket to $2000 trny) and also in Stars 8-game(ticket to $2000 trny) am I wasting time? You see,I'd like to find out how I rate (without losing alot of $)and without getting "spanked" too hard!(either of which would be bad for my game!)Again.Thank-you for input!

step a) take $1 from each year you've profited, then deposit the $40 on Stars.
steb b) lose the $40
steb c) back to freerolls, your bread and butter

foolproof imo.

Mentat,

I would consider counting my hourly rate at buy in tables, and my hourly rate at freerolls and let that tell you which you are most profitable.
If you are a good player at tourneys and profitable, then buy in tourneys will probably be best chance.
Let your stats be your guide. No offense meant! :D
