So many poker player say "Good Hand" after they are getting beaten and the response to it is always "Thanks". Why do they say thanks? Its not like they have done something to get this good hand... Can someone explain please?

So many anonymous ******** online that some folks think even minor efforts at civility can't hurt. Other folks adhere to the "don't tap on the fish tank" philosophy.

It's no different than when some says, "Good job", "Happy Birthday", "Nicely done", "That looks great", "You're really good at that", etc.

The generally accepted, AUTOMATIC, reply is, "Thanks". As in just like your parents taught you.

And it's not always about the end result of the cards - sometimes credit is due for the way they played the hand to get max value.

This.

When someone says "nice hand" to me, I don't stop to analyse their comment and come up with a perfect response. I just respond automatically and without thinking. It's kind of like when someone asks "how are you?" How much thought do you put into an answer to that? You probably just respond instantly and automatically.

Plus, it's considered impolite to ignore someone when they say something to you. Saying "thanks" is a short and polite way of saying "I acknowledge your comment". How else do you acknowledge the fact that someone just spoke to you?

And it's not always about the end result of the cards - sometimes credit is due for the way they played the hand to get max value.

I generally will say either "nice bluff" or "well played" instead of "nice hand", but if someone says "nice hand" to me, I'll interpret it as them complimenting my play.

I always say "nice hand" whenever someone beats me. It doesn't matter if run my KK into AA or my AA into 29o and they run a 9 high straight on me. I don't care about losing with big hands and I want to encourage my opponents to play hands like those. So, I like to take the more nicer, kinder route.

As far as my opponent saying 'Thanks', I like to think they're thanking me for not calling them a bunch of names and telling them to go kill themselves for busting me in a $2 MTT.

I do hate it, though, when I run into a bigger hand like my AQ vs AK, A on flop and I say 'Nice hand' before the hand is over and I spike 2 pair on the river. I always feel bad after that. Like...what do I say?

"It's it too late to say sorry?"

It`s not like they said bad words to you when you have good hand? I hate that, also hate when three people from one country start talking on their language - Brasilians most often, it really irritates me.
nice hand, TY GL is sign of friendly players.

It's part of our social behavior and poker still is a social happening (even though online it doesn't always look like).
Most of the times I like to see it the way that they think it was a good way of playing rather than just getting good cards. Like this it makes even more sense, as they give a complement for something you did good, instead of something that you got by random. But even if they say it just because of the cards it's still the same as a congratulations for something like a birthday which was also given to you by random.
Social courtesy is part of our culture and even though it might sometimes look strange, it's something (one of the few things though) we kinda have to accept without questioning to much.

Ive noticed sometimes people will give a compliment or say thanks to be a jerk which is totally different than saying NH after you beat them. It seems like a common courtesy but usually ive found that nobody says anything after most hands which makes someone saying nh or well played less common.

Well, other than those who go off on a rant/tantrum after a bad beat, what else is there to say?

I tend to say "nh" or "wp" when I actually mean it (which is most often going to be on a CC freeroll or against someone I know otherwise), when they show up with quads or better, or when the fish hit his miracle card to suck out.
I'm always nice to the fish. Can't stand people berating the fish for their bad play. Feels like the ones doing the berating don't know where the money comes from.
Unfortunately it's very hard to respond to them without inadvertedly calling the fish a fish. Can't really say stuff like "don't insult the fish" or "don't tap on the fish tank".

And I'll always say "ty" when someone says "nh" to me, and "gg" when I get busted or I bust someone. Common courtesy, imo.

In the CC freerolls, especially with members I've built some rapport with, I'll generally say something along the lines of "ouch, sorry" if I get it in as a big dog but suck out. Especially if - for a split second - I had resigned myself to being booted from the tournament.

I hate using "ul" because to me that reads like "u lose" rather than "unlucky". I hate it when people say that to me as well for the same reason. Feels smug.

Or "gg" when someone eliminates you from the game with a minimal chance of win.

I always say nice hand when somebody bluffs me, whether I win or not.

And I say nice fold when I have been bluffing.

Although I probably say NH less than most players I will always reply with a TY when given a compliment. After all I just took your chips so why not be courteous in return

They're just congratulating you on your successful courtship with lady luck, that's all. Only thing that makes sense.
