Ive been playing poker for nearly two years now, an I love the ups an downs of the whole game. I think in the last six months ive started to win more than I lose but only slightly (im a tournament fella). Anyways i think ive done this by reading a couple of books and just general trial and error at the tables. However my question is how do you take your game to the next level? Do you read more books, an if so which? Do you play at higher buy ins? If so what if you cant afford? How did the really top players get to where they are now? Anyways hope i can get some good advice, cheers!

What books have you already read? And what limits do you play? If my bankroll is low, i play in cheaper tourneys and vice versa. The first 4 books i read were Super/System, Theory of Poker, HOH and Ace on the River. There are many good books for SnGs, MTTs, Cash games and psychology.

Your questions cover a pretty broad spectrum but I think I have some general advice that couldn't hurt.

Keep records: Date/time/buy-in/game/structure/place/%ITM and what ever else you can think of. When you start to take the game seriously the first question you need to answer is, "Am I a winning player?". If not then why? If so then how can I win more? Don't speculate, gather information.

Read Everything: If you haven't already then you need to read the Harrington tournament books.

Don't Move Up: If you're unsure about playing for more money then you shouldn't. Do some research on bankroll requirements and money management. You'll find plenty of answers to those types of questions right here on CC.

As previously stated try not to move up before your bankroll can handle it, otherwise you'll have to start all over.
