I live close to NYC so most casinos that offer poker are hours away. The proposals for new casinos might bring them closer but still too far to make poker a regular pass time as I would like it to be. And besides, those casinos are years away. The racinos close by do not offer table games and they have not adopted even an electronic hold 'em poker option although those are available. My question is whether or not it is worth seeking out underground cad rooms or is that too risky. I'd appreciate any replies from members who have gone this route. Advice is always welcome. Thanks in advance.

Underground games are definitely worthwhile. It helps to have a buddy to go with you when you start out. Absolutely you should scope out the place the games are held, how's the neighborhood, any security, what does the player pool feel like, any railbirds, what kind of chips (custom or not), what is the rake, etc.

I am near Albany NY and there are about 4-5 clubs that run around here.

Some are decent. Some also have been robbed in the past.

Just need to make sure you trust where you are going, and hopefully avoid any potential cheaters (collusion is def prominent)

What are some common ways some regulars can collude against a new mark?

I have heard the stories about collusion and robberies. It does make sense to be wary since there is less oversight than at legal operations. It's a shame because not making things like poker legal leave room for plenty of shenanigans.
