Me and my buddies came up with a new variant of Texas Holdem a few weeks ago after we got bored with regular Texas Holdem. We don't have a name for it, I guess Utah Holdem since we live there. I just wanted to post it up here since we've been having some good fun playing it and I wanted to share it for anyone who wanted to try something new. Anyway, how it's played...

It's best played with five players and NO more. It just doesn't work that great. Each player is dealt six cards, players will choose one card from their hand (not showing it) and give it to the dealer, he will shuffle them and they will be used as the community cards. Along with the usual check/bet/raise/fold, players can swap any/all of their cards for a fee; 0.10/0.20 = 0.10, 0.25/0.50 = 0.25, 0.50/1.00 = 0.50 and so on, this money will be placed in the pot. The rest plays out like normal.

*If there are less than five players/not enough for an entire board the dealer will add the necessary amount of cards from the top of the deck. This will be done after players have been dealt their hands.

Any questions? If anyone decides to try it, tell me if you enjoyed it or not. I'd be very interested to hear. :)

Sounds a little complicated. Maybe we shouldn't be drinking the first time we play it. I can see where it'd have it's own strategy.

So you have 5 cards. Does it work like Omaha where you can only use two or you can use as many from your hand as you like? Seems like people would have the nuts every time.

we play something similar to this..we are dealt four cards...you discard two before the flop..post flop you can discard a whole card and buy a new one. if you don't want to buy one, you pay the small blind amount to call. Its a limit game but surprisingly pots can be big.

Pretty sure Utah Hold'em would either be where you get multiple sets of hole cards to play at the same time (AKA Polygamy Poker) or you get no cards at all because cards are the Devil!

If I'm reading it right, each players ends up with 5 in the hand and 5 on the board?

This would be more of a variation on Omaha than Holdem. There are already live O8 games where each player gets 5 cards. It would depend on the answer to JohnBoys question.

If played like Omaha, (must use 2 from hand, 3 from board), then each player holds the equivalent of 10 holdem starting hands, and is up against 40 (assuming full table of 5 players) outside HE hands.

If played like HE where any combo of cards in hand or on board, then you better be eating 4 leaf clover soup from a horseshoe, with your fingers crossed to expect to win. As each player would/could end up with at least 100 combos of 5 card hands, and if nobody folds, would be up against 400 combos.

So, IMHO, it will never be a circuit game, but in a drunken frenzy it could be Laffs Galore, who happens to be a cousin to Pussy Galore.;):D Great variation for Strip Poker.

The cool aspect is that you know one of the community cards to come. Imagine you discard the ace holding 2 aces and pray it comes on the river. Seems discarding cards that help you is a good plan in some situations.

Five in the hand, and five on the board. Sounds like a lot of money changes hands. :)

BTW: You could play this with seven players. The extra two cards become burn cards. This way, you don't even know if your perfect choice will make it onto the board.

Nope, you can use as many as you want.

lol. I would rep you I could on this forum

In some situations, yes. There is potential to shoot yourself in the foot however. I have a few times where I had a four of a kind and unintentionally laid down the wrong card and handed my friend a flush.

Just wrapped up about half an hour ago (bad thing about Utah, coworker has to go home early for church on Sundays :\) we played a few games of Utah but reverted back to Texas tonight once one of our guys raged about a few stacked hands. We might scale it back to three or four cards, discarding one to the community. Even though it's for fun, my brother and I have become rather determined to get this game right, that's been enjoyable in and of itself.

Why would anyone good at poker want to play anything with more than 6 people? The more people at your table the less often it's correct to play a hand and the less often you can use skill to make a profit.

Full ring live is like the most boring thing ever. I just tolerate it because I can't convince the donks to play shorthanded.
